Music Video - GH1, FD primes

Cheers Martti, I appreciate it. Still working my way to getting the best out of this little camera - but enjoying it.

I used the following Canon FD primes - 28 2.8, 50 1.4, 100 2.8 and the stock lens. I shot in smooth mode with all manual settings. Various ISO's. Mostly natural light but with some reflectors and for the car stuff a cheap portable fluorescent.

Beautiful... some of the sharpest looking stuff I've seen coming out the GH1! I'm putting the 28 2.8 and 100 2.8 on my to get list right now. Already have the 50 1.4 :)

How did you focus? Did you utilize that auto zoom in focus thing the GH1 has?

wow, amazing man, great job, how much did you slow down this in post? i mean, it looks like it was a bit, the only thing i didnt like here was the singer, in the parts where he is singing, he didnt look like he is into it in alot of the singing shots..that shot where he is walking from far is perfect..

ok, im sorry , i just saw on your page that you did slow it down..

@yabyum The 28 2.8 is the least useful I've found, also not the greatest lens. The 100mm is really nice though. Focus was using the built in magnifier on the GH1. I also used the sock-loupe for a few shots which worked pretty well.

@sammysammy Yep - slowed down a lot of it by 50% in post.

Great looking shots, very well done! Lovely grading too.

What was your ISO like on the night driving shots? And what kind of slider/dolly rig did you have for some of the daytime shots?

jshaw, which shots did you use the 28mm and the 100mm for? thanks

Sorry, but I'm struggling to remember.. It was mostly the 50mm. I shot some of the carstuff on the 28 - but not sure if I used that footage. Maybe a couple of shots in the house. 100mm I used on the street shots. The thing about the 28 is obviously it's not that wide with the crop factor, so I would end up using the stock lens instead.

Appreciate the comments on the grade. Spent a long time trying to get it right. Very tough. ISO on driving shots was up to 800. The lens was a 1.4.

Slider was the DIY Zaza slider as detailed in the DIY thread on this very site...!

Great Video Joe!!!!

Im looking at doing a music video with a few friends and I was wondering how you acheived a few things....

1) How did you mount the camera on the hood of the car while it was in motion (or was it mounted just inside the windsheild of the dashboard? how did you stablize it?

2) How are syncing the song the person singing it? Do you layout the song on the timeline and edit to that or do you use another method?

3) can you post the link to the DIY zaza dolly forum.....

1) Hague suction mount - (http://www.b-hague.co.uk/hague_double_suction_mount_sm4.htm) One shot on the bonnet and some inside the car mounted to the side window - made possible by the small size and rotating screen of the camera.

2) Had playback on set and then just dropped that onto the timeline and cut to it.

JShaw,

Did you set the custom settings in smooth mode like detail, contrast, noise reduction etc to anything or just keep it at 0 in the middle?

I had a smile like this ^___^ watching the footage. It shows that a bit of ingenuity and innovation can produce amazing results with £50 eBay lenses. It reminded me of why I was so excited to get the FD lenses in the first place, before the addiction took hold and I went to the much more expensive Zeiss lenses and everything got hyped up.

It also reminds me that in the right circumstances the GH1 is capable of standing head and shoulders with the very best digital video cameras in the world, in 720p at least, as long as its in the right hands with the right lenses.

I'll be keeping an eye out for what you come up with next.

Just wanted to bump this up because it's so awesome imo. I'm seriously reconsidering this whole -2 is the best thing. You were at 0 and were still able to manipulate the footage in post production with great results...!
