Music video, 24p, 24pa, or 30p

What would be your reason for 24pa? I know each person will say something different but I'm trying to understand why people shoot 30p.

I'm going to second the vote for 24pA.

24p is really not even worth considering if you have the ability to work with 24pA. 24p was designed as the "poor man's" version so that it can be edited at 29.97, but that means that you get interlacing since the pull-down hasn't been removed.

I only use 30p for a couple of things: straight-to-Internet projects where the client wants something closer to the standard video look, and for some slow-mo effects in 24pA projects. 30p can be edited in a standard 29.97 time line, but there's just something about it that looks odd for everyday production.

Traditionally, big-budget music videos have been (some are still) film projects. 24pA is your best bet for keeping with that flavor.

24pA - what do I use for the pull down? 29.97 I seen the thread Noah posted saying use 29.97 I think I would have thought to use 24p pull down.

This has been covered in several threads both here and in the FCP forum.

Set your capture preference to DV-NTSC 48kHz, 29.97, with "advanced pulldown removal."

It doesn't matter if you shoot 24p, 24pA, or 30p... they all go to tape as 29.97. FCP needs to see the whole 29.97 stream to detect the cadence. Once it captures the footage, the pull-down will be gone and the clips will show as 23.98. They can then be dropped into a 23.98 time line for editing.

I use a style called MTV30p on my camera.

These screen grabs were shot with this setting, 1/8 ND on (a little darker in the shadows), and given a slight bronze look in post. Has never given me any type of trouble and easy to handle if you need to add color.

The lighting here was terrible, just overhead track, about 40w per bulb.
When we go for the "real deal" we will be using stage lights and fillers.

The 30p looks a little smother to me and I do not have trouble when converting to my videos in the timeline.

These are the base settings I got from someone in these forums:

*Band is "Terre Haute" out of Iowa - good group of guys.

Music to video is extremely rewarding, overall it has captured my attention more than just about any form of media. Short and sweet, pump the sound into the camera from the board, this not only sounds better, but makes the video flow quite well.

Good luck!
