Music Film - "Stranger" by EndlessBlue

Hey monte, that looked great. I especially appreciated the nice clean and well color adjusted composits that you made, it really puts inot perspective all the time you have put into this project. Congratulations on getting it done, there is definetly a lot of work done on this shoot, and it shows, every scene is nicely planned, and fits well with the others. There are a couple parts where she tends to stand out a little bit too much, to me, especailly when she is doing the "star wars" hologram thing, but overall thoses scenes look very good. There is also a point where she fades out, and the background power lines go to black and white, right at that point there seems to be an airplane that flies into the scene, just a little distracting.
loved you editing and color correcting style, you got some pretty psycadelic colors going on there, with your highlights and shodows useign diffent hues and shades. pretty unique look, not often seen.

Good work monte, keep it up.

Thanks guys, surpises me though that lots of people referenced the area near the beginning where she's blue-ish - but I'm glad you arent just saying "it's great!" unless you really think so.

Keep it coming

I personally am *pretty* happy with the video overall so I'll be keeping it as is. I also noticed a few problems with the quicktime render - there is a part where it has trouble in the woods, and slows down the framerate, that is unintentional

Also when the cars slow down to a stop, it wanted to draw two fields, so it jitters a bit, that is also unintentional.

With that said - keep it coming guys, thanks alot

best wishes

Monte, that really was some fantastic images. The girl walking amongst the fast cars - wow, I must ask how did you achieve that? I'm guessing its rotoscoping - did that take a long time? and what about the streaking cars? please tell me how you did that!!

The color correction was very nice. I got lost into the video - the fast clouds and stuff, the flashing people - taken together it felt almost like a matrix style drama, almost on the edge of sci fi but not really.

overall this is one of the best videos i've seen in a while. mad props to you and please share some secrets of your effects with us

peace

Thanks Lee,

Yes it was rotoed, twice (first time the harddrive died). What exactly do you mean by "the streaking cars?" I'm not sure I completely understand what you mean.

I'm glad to hear you liked it - it was just meant to be flashy and visually entertaining with an underlining of a pseudo plot that really shouldn't be all that understandable, more of a segway to get to different portions of the video.

Best wishes

That was amazing...i saw this video a few times. It's awesome..the song is a little depressing though.

the composites kick ass!

hi monte, what i meant by the streakign cars comment - just the cars passing by on the street at a very high speed, there was this very cool motion blur as they zoomed by,

thanks!

Ah - I shot that at 60i, because I knew I could achieve that result in post, I wasn't so sure about 24p with 1/24 or 1/48 shutter, I tried it out a little bit and it was too mushy - like there was too much trailing and I didn't like it as much.

Lloyd - the only thing I used after effects for was the picture frame painting effect, everything else, including tracking the picture to the picture frame while dollying in/out, was done in Vegas. Everything.

Monte its nice man...some of it is amazing...dont like a couple of framing but its smooth...after spending so long doing the composites are you put off or gagging to do more FX work???
Im a practical effects man myself.
A. Because Im crap at it.
B. Cant afford/ blag someone else to do them for me.

Lloyd - Vegas was used to roto, and it sucked ass - it was great if she was no more than 3-7 feet away from the camera, but when she's far away, the difficulty is that the window in which you roto is really low res, like its set at the "preview" resolution, and you can't change it, so when you have to go in deep for little details - you can't see what you're doing. It also has a tendency to crash when you do heavier and more detailed rotoing (ie 100+ frames of roto)

JP - This is just one of those videos where its like "There isn't really any content, it's just sort of to get you (the audience) to listen to the song and enjoy the visuals"

Keyword - visuals. :)

I love color correcting, I would seriously consider a job as a colorist when I get older and better at it - I love it to death. But the rotoing is something that I can't stand. God, especially when you have to do hundreds of frames twice cus your maxtor crapped out on you.

Thanks, keep it coming kids

monte the video looks great, i'm glad you were able to finish it. rotoscoping does suck, no matter what you're using whether its vegas or shake or something crazy like flint/flame. you def have to get a copy of after effects, the keyframe interpolation will literally cut your roto time in half. whats really amazing to me is not the video itself but what you were able to do with the limited technology you had available. great job! we def have to collaborate on some projects in the future.

No doubt - Rotoing is such a pain - especially with vegas - but I shouldn't complain, as vegas has quite good compositing and color correction tools considering it's a basic NLE.

Definately we should collaborate, shoot me ideas any time I'm always open to fresh and different views. Best wishes!~

Hey Monte. I have seen this post around for a while and I'm not sure why I haven't watched the clip before. You did all the compositing in Vegas? Wow.

Everyone has commented on the obvious strengths of the video...

I think that the wide shots of the sky/woods/highway/etc. look really great. However I think that your MS/CU are compositionally a little weak. The ones that stick out to me are the ones where you stick the actress's head in the middle of the frame vetically. There are several tracking shots and some vfx shots (mirror) where her head is right in the middle of the frame.

This is being very picky and is completly just opinion but I think that the lessening of amount of head room would improve the film visually. If you watch law and order they do very interesting things while working in the 4x3 format.

Expecting great things from you next project

PS: shake4 is the own for roto

A really great work, monte... Something for all of us dvxers to be proud of.

Thanks smith!

Escoz - I think I'm generally really good about headroom, but I do know what you're talking about - what can I say - I had alot on my plate:

1. Sick as a dog, but I had to shoot that weekend (temperature 103, hadnt slept in a day and half, and was shooting in below 40 degree + windy areas)
2. First time using the DVX
3. 1 person crew, with the actoress helping to move the dolly, track, lights, and so forth
4. Multiple locations crapping out
5. Location scouting literally at the last minute
6. Extremely tight rental schedule
7. Learning other aspects of using and setting up the gear
8. Fitting the dolly and all the other **** into a tiny car, every location, and carrying all that **** around... I did get a bit buffer from it though...

So in other words, the artistic side wasn't always ontop of my mind, or not even the artistic side, but the technical and composition side I suppose... I'm amazed it turned out as well as it did...

Anywho - thanks again esco, I gotta check out shake!

best wishes
monte

this was excellent...questions from the rookie

did you do all the color correction in post?

How much of it did you shoot in 60i? Was it a mix match of 24p and 60i?

In a general sense, what were the settings on the camera? (like CINE, etc)

And how do you do that "light flash effect". Like when an object is white, and the flash seems to grow from that area?
