Music Film - "Stranger" by EndlessBlue

Bag of Douche
Jesus Christ, I think it's done.

I suppose some elements of the video would have turned out better if I wasn't deathly ill that weekend, and it wasn't my first time laying my hands on the dvx. I'm amazed it turned out at all.

If possible - having watched it - tell me what you thought in terms of what emotions in conveyed or whatnot. I really set out to convey a few "emotions" that play along with the mood of the song. I just want to know if it's clear, or what kind of signals you guys get from this - I'm always interested to see what people get out of it, because this is somewhat of an ambigious video...

On the fence about a few things...

oh yah

HAPPY 1000TH POST TO ME~!!!

hey man.. fellow graduate of the Canon Zr60 :)

looks damn good! Some of the effects were cheesy (the shots where the girl was some weird purple/bluish colour).

Other than that, some of those shots were the best I've seen from a DVX. Very filmic...

good job

I could see this video on MTV. Very artistic. I'll break it apart more tomorrow I gotta jet. Did you plan for the overcast day? The mood in the sky really help this video. Great job monte!

hey man... way to get the most out of your dvx!! very creative. I liked just about every shot you did... There's so many favorites that I'd be listing most every scene...

A couple of suggestions though:
It seems like it could flow a little better.. especially in the begininng.. the random shaky shots of the forrest really throws it off for me.. and theres alot of pixelation on those shots... different camera? Its like watching an action film on a bad plasma/lcd screen. Also the random pan shots of the room and bathroom as she walks inside definately seem out of place. I think you should start off the video simple... dont jump around to much... then really hit the audience with random stuff later in the song. I see the effect you were trying to get with the shakiness.. its just a little too exagerated to me.

Also there cool shot of the girl in the mirror needs one minor touchup... you can obviously see her in the edges of the mirror.. (which im sure you're aware of) But to me at first it looks like a mess-up - like you screwed up trying to paste that video inside the mirror frame. It wasn't until the closeup that it actually made sense.

I really like how you overlayed the timpelapse with slomo and regular speed. Thats something I have always invisioned doing. Actually your style of filmmaking seems very similar to mine.

However, I have no projects that back up that statement... you'll just have to take my word for it! I'm in FL and I know your in MN but I honestly think we would work really good together! At least creatively. Check out my music video at http://www.floodgaterecords.com/encounter/ Tell me what you think. This video totally contradicts what i said about a similar style of filmmaking. Mainly because its a completely different style of music.

Also I really like your "Ring" effect on the girl... how you make her distort and come out of the frame. I love the color correction as well. Is this video getting any good promotion? I hope so.

Wow, now that was just like way cool... definitely in my top 5 clips I've seen from this forum!!

I'd agree that the flow needs to be tweaked.... the only bit I think was outta place were the sequences where the camera was shaken in the woods.

For the record what did you edit in? i.e. FCP and was the totally awesome colour correction done by hand or was it a set of filters i.e. Magic Bullet?

Indy....

Cool !

Creative job, nice colors, directing, I liked !

You spent lot of time on masks, I guess.... :)

hey monte, i'm surprised you didn't get any more comments/reviews... Your video is one of the best I've seen in a while. Got any more coming up? I don't think you've really even responded to any of our comments either... i'd like to know what you think.

I'm surprised too, Cody - Zombiefest is quite the beast I'm sure. We'll see what happens...

The comments in reference to the pacing is funny, because I posted the (basically) same first 2 minutes like a couple months back and heard nothing but good, and I was/am more worried about the pacing of the last 2 minutes...

I just finished location scouting this old building that a bunch of construction work is being done to, it looks SO awesome, the only problem is I would have to work around the schedules of the guys building it (I almost got caught, I had to slip out, Metal Gear Solid style) Although I'm probably not going to do another video for atleast a month, this one took ALOT out of me. I actually passed out in a graveyard while shooting it in under 38*F weather, wayyyy too sick and too little sleep...

Coffee
The song is by Endless Blue, the young girl is actually a friend, as the band was stuck in WI and I really needed to shoot that weekend because of the overcastness and raininess, which fit the mood of the song, even though I was still recovering from not getting any sleep at a shoot in Santa Monica...

That's the story

As far as distribution, it's going on a DVD that will be sent out with all CD orders or something, basically it's supposedly having the video, bio of me, stuff about me, stuff about band, and a couple live performance videos.

They seemed pretty happy:
"Looks great, very, very cool video! Been telling people all
about it and scoffing at other bands' amatuer videos... ;)"

I might make some minor changes, but this is the version I sent to the band. Anyways - thanks for the comments guys, keep rockin it!

best wishes

That was fantastic, monte. Great visuals and even better post work. I'm impressed beyond words right now.

Well done!

......daaayum! first time on the dvx? that's freakin amazing. the only thing that stuck out was the bluish puple effect thing on the girl, like lloydc said, it was all bright and clean, seemed out of place. but the rest of it was awesome. i loved the color correction, and that slo-mo/sped-up shot looked perfect.

emotions? um, idk, it didn't really stir anything up inside me, but do guys even have emotions? what did thartley think?

keep it up, man.

great job man! dont have anything to say but keep on goin...make more!

ditto on the laying off the crack...

Nice one! Especially liked the fast cars footage and slow motion girl... I wouldn't mind if you could tell how you did it...?

here i am with my snacks :D

ok this was visually impressive, i loved a lot of the shots here. and i do think your worries about the pacing in the last 2 minutes are valid, maybe it's just the last minute i don't know but i fel it too. it's just a minor flaw here though i really liked watching it and wasn't bored at all.

the shot of the girl at the table filmed trough the dooropening was so cool, i had it in mind for a short story but i didn't think i could get it to work. it looks perfect here.

Cool

Cool

There were a lot of really cool things in this video Monte, great job! I know I'll probably get flamed for this; I really enjoyed a lot of the rotoscoping and color correction that you did, as an experiment. What I mean is that it just doesn't work for me in motion. I think any still that you take from the video is gorgeous, but there's just something about the 'look' that doesn't fit for me when shown in the video. Otherwise, I think a lot of the pacing issues that you bring up are valid ones and can probably be remidied with tighter editing. For this being the first time you've ever touched the DVX I'm very impressed! You only have improvement from here :).
