Provide a user-selectable range of focus-assist options, one of which would magnify only the part of the image which is in focus - so the image in the lcd would look a bit weird and distorted but you'd clearly know what was in focus. For instance, with a portrait, if the near eye is in focus it would be magnified so it would kind of look like it was bugging out, but if you turn the focus slightly (assuming narrow depth of field) so now the nose is in focus but not the eye anymore, then the nose would look way big but the eye would look normal.
