Mtv..??

What happened? Where did the music videos go? (mtv2 I know.. but that is still kinda lame) For years I didn’t watch it and remember that the majority of the programming was music videos. Now it is one competition show after the next.. Real World is such a ridiculous formula now and you can see that they are casting for their competition shows. Kids get drunk, get in a hot tub, have sex, break up, get handed a job they don’t deserve, talk behind each others backs, get drunk, get arrested, go on holiday, get drunk.

Is it because this is what the general public really likes or have they run out of ideas? And what was wrong with showing music videos anyway? Was there a specific year that anyone remembers it changing?

MTV sucks really bad. It's been going downhill for pretty much the past 5 years in my opinion. Maybe even longer. When I first started to see MTV2 it was really cool, and they pretty much solely played music vids, good ones too. Now it's hard to tell the difference between them. The only MTV shows I watch are wild boyz and jackass. Viva La Bam is a ****ing stupid show. The message they are sending to everyone is really bad. And Laguna beach? Please.....

When they launched the career of a talentless, boring, hack, like Carson Daly.... That was the beginning of the end of mtv.

I agree with all of you...but dont u think its funny/pathetic that they show people go through all that stuff on tv?

VH1 is starting to fall into series programming like MTV did too...

I love how everyone always likes to talk about the golden age of MTV. I really don't think there was one, it was, and always kind of has been just vapid teenage entertainment. I'm sure the younger generation will say the same thing when they turn 30 and they flip in the television to see that MTV has re-invented itself yet again. They will talk about how great shows like laguna beach were and the prime years of real worlds. It's really much better just to not watch any television, that's what I do. woot.

For me MTV Bass isn't to bad, my slow down video (right click download please) http://www.steadiforum.com/virus7.mov made top 8 in a pole. We made it gorilla stlye and exposure on mtv really helped the artists. Funny thing is i never sore it on mtv cuz i don't have it, don't miss it.
I'd rarther make tv than watch it anyday. But theirs so much bad tv you really do have to go out and make it yourselfs !

How profound. Arent you like 17 Cody?

I remember when one had to pay for MTV. I remember when they launched a campaign whereas one had to ask the cable company for MTV

I remember when MTV was 24/7 Music Videos and it was new and exciting and changed an entire industry and generation. It's influence was huge on pop culture, film and of course the music industry.

That was the golden age we are referring too. But you were not there to see it so what you have today is the vapid teenage entertainment that has as much wieght as shite.

It was exciting, it was new.

It was not vapid teenage entertainment like it is today. Something tells me MTV will not re-invent itself but has found it's target niche. It's not about the music anymore; it's about the cash

That is very true. If you can crate programming that applies to the whole age group of 12-18 then pack a ton of advertising in it the station will make money. This is the age group with mommy and daddy’s money and small jobs. They have very little financial responsibly and are willing to buy the new crystal covered cell phone. It is a formula that is working very well and they will never change back

Didn't you just say this?

Of course, maybe you did mean Gorilla. Like The Monkees. You guy's did seem to be 'Monkeying Around' in the vid.

MTV comes and goes.

Some times they do good programing and sometime (right now) it sucks.

One good thing is that nothing lasts too long on MTV.

I'm glad the station exists. They've added a lot. All the "MTV style" editing that olds hate, I love.

I actually remember the old Video Killed the Radio Star thing airing on MTV. And ZZTop... These things were new back in the day, and really did impact entire industries, as John said. It was visual radio. Faces with music I would not have known otherwise.

I firmly believe that MTV and the advent of the music video is in large part responsible for the deteriorization of music as we knew it.

I believe this !

American Idol itself is a testament to that statement. There are too many 'artists' (Excuse me while I laugh my ass helocopter style) that are here for a pretty face alone.

Can you dance? Can you sing ? Are you hot ? Perfect !

Can you write music or play an instrument ? No ? Don't worry about it.
