C200: MP4 and RAW Footage Mixing with the Canon C200

Hey creative peeps! I was just wondering if anyone here ya tried to mix there RAW footage with MP4 footage? If so, which LUT did you apply and what preset did you use? I have done manual tests before and it worked pretty well but I just wanted to know if someone on here has a different approach to handling mix codecs post processing

Cheers!

The professional way is to use tools like Resolve, Nucoda or Baselight, they are designed for these situations, you use mathematical transforms to enable you to edit in one single gamma/gamut and destination.

Yeah that’s what the editors we work with use. They just send us the output and we do the rest, I was just curious if anyone here use AP for their entire workflow as to AP now supports the RAW files.

I think it would depend on a lot of things - was all the footage shot under the same circumstances, lighting and color temp-wise? Same lens(es)? And how hard are you pushing the footage in the grade. So many variables would come into play here.

In theory, you could apply the same LUT to both CRL and MP4 footage and achieve a similar look but if the MP4 footage was shot in harsher conditions, say it was over exposed, it might be hard to pull down the highlights enough to compensate whereas there would be more data in the CRL footage to try and fix it. If I found myself in this situation, I think I would find a LUT that worked for my MP4 footage and then apply that to the CRL. In my experience, it's easier to manipulate the higher bandwidth footage (CRL) into looking like 8-bit 420 footage (MP4 / XF-AVC) than the other way around.

All that said, I'm sure a real colorist could chime in and give us their thoughts. I'm far from a professional in this regard, just giving you my thoughts based on my experience.

Great point Dustin! Thank you - yeah I was just thinking aloud in case we will need to go this route, currently since we control everything, we have the luxury to do either all MP4 or all CRL - just wanted to hear if anyone has encounter a situation where they had 2 of the same files. I did quick test just shooting a 10 second scene with the same lighting - applied LUT to match, I get really close but for some reason the MP4 comes out to be a tad brighter, but then again it was a quick test, did not really dig into it - I just wanted to know for future instances that I may encounter.

As you said, hopefully someone who is into color or a colorist in this groups stumbles upon this post ;)

Always enjoyed the knowledge I learn from this fine group on this forum.......
