Moving to a FS700

Finally moving away from the DSLR world, sad to say but sold our new Ronin M and trying to sell our NX1 system before we invest in the FS700. Few things I had questions about is how much the upgrade for 4K now if we end up buying used that doesn't have the firmware. What is a good used price for a camera now. Also I know this is an open question but how much longer will the FS700 be camera to be used. I feel like even though its getting old its still an amazing camera and with the upgrades to 7q recording it will be a camera for a few more years that people will use, but would love to hear your thoughts on it. We are going with an FS700 over the Ursa Mini for things like Higher Frame rates and the E mount can use both PL and EF lens as well as speedbooster, but is there any thing the URSA mini will be better at that you can thing of?

$4000 is a good price for one without up grade... the upgrade is $400 plus shipping .... with the 7Q it's hard to beat ...still

Uh... The FS700R (that has 4K from factory) is $4.999 new, and then you don't have to worry about sending it in and being without it for some time etc.

Haha it kinda is, this is one reason why we have put our buy on pause and will keep using our NX1 till the Ursa Mini gets out and we can test it to see if its whta we need

One particular difference is you will have the option of using a global shutter with the URSA Mini.

As you mentioned, you absolutely need the Odyssey 7Q+ for it. It turns the camera into an entirely different piece of hardware.

However, I would recommend renting any external recorder and using it with any camera and seeing how you like it if you've never used one. Some people quickly realize it's not for them...mainly because it gets cumbersome and it's another thing you have to set up and worry about.

Have you also looked at the FS7?

The Blackmagic cameras may have dozens of issues, but it's very hard to let go of that image. Just so beautiful.

Comparing the FS700 to an Ursa Mini is like comparing a VW to an Audi.

Not the greatest example, as VW owns a major portion of Audi (and a bunch of other names like Bentley and Lamborghini and Porsche), with the various models sharing the same chassis, etc. We presume Black Magic Design and Sony don't have the same cross ownership issues.

I moved from DSLR's to the FS700 about six months ago and it sure has made life a lot easier. My plan was to eventually get the 4K upgrade and add a recorder, mainly because of all the people who say "you have to have a recorder" or "the internal codec is basically useless".

A TV show I edited just went to air, where the main camera was an FS700 (not mine - primary camera operator had one too) with internal codec. And now I've totally scrapped the idea of an internal recorder or 4K upgrade for the foreseeable future. It looked absolutely amazing on my 60-something inch HD TV. Certainly good enough for all my purposes for the next few years. I've even gotten around broadcasters "50 mbps" limitations under the 'special circumstances' exceptions by claiming we need the slow motion from the FS700.

It proved to me that there is plenty of mileage left in the FS700 still - and even more with Raw/4K add-ons. People here tend to focus on whatever the latest camera is but in the real world the FS700 is a good choice that will serve you for several years to come.

No idea what the used prices are in the USA but if they are only $5000 new, I'd forget about used.

I just bought an FS700R for $4,999.00 from B&H. It's wonderful. The only thing that kept me from buying it sooner was I had an FS100 which I loved, but once the Shogun recorded 4 and 2k from the FS700 I sold my FS100, my NinjaII, and bought the Shogun and the FS700. The image and pic profiles on the Fs700 are wonderful--beautiful image, and S-log 2 is fantastic for grading. Not crazy about the internal ND filters--talk about clunky--but the rest---awesome! And the Shogun Rocks!!! I think it's better than the O7Q---unless you just have to shoot in RAW--but soon the Shogun will have an update for RAW---if that's your thing. I'm super pleased with 4 and 2k pro res HQ.
I don't see why this camera won't be more than a viable acquisition tool for years...and it's much less expensive than the FS7 and it's very expensive media. By comparison the SSD drives are much less expensive.

My biggest issue with the Shogun is the lack of anything above 30p out of the FS700 if you want 10bit. If they could at least get the 2K signal at 50 or 100fps that would be enough for me. At least good enough not to warrant almost twice the price of the 7Q.
