T2i Movie Mode continuing past GB limit?

Hi all, I don't have the camera yet. I am interested in using a DSLR camera as a C-Cam during long interviews over 30 minutes, alongside mainly DVCPro or XDCamHD rigs which now tend to break for a reel/disk change after 30 mins.

I am wondering what happens when the T2i's GB limit is reached- is the Canon smart enough to automatically start another file and continue recording (as long as there is room left on the SD card), or does it require some button pushing to continue?

Thanks for your insights.

Mathew

No, the camera stops recording at 4GB. You would have to manually start recording again.

For a number of reasons, Canon has not implemented file spanning for video. If you need a camera that does it, then consider the Panasonic GH1.

Thanks ydgmdlu. I was afraid you were going to say that!
The part of my brain that is sensible tells me to wait then for the GH2, which hopefully will offer some added framerates to keep pace with Canon. The A and B cameras I described above are shooting at 30P.
The GH1 only offers 1080 with its 24P-in-a-30 mode, right?

Hi again, Actually, shooting is required to be done with a "30P look", but in the 1080i standard. As a result, each field has identical image. Why is not up to me, but there it is.

Barry, I just assume that 1080 is bigger and better than 720. But now that you mention it, what is the difference between the GH1's 720 30P and 60P? Is 60P 50%slow motion? Is is commonly upconverted to a 1080i interlaced movie? Sorry if this is veering off Canon.

60p is not slow motion, per se. The camera records at 60 fps, and the files play at 60 fps, so the result is simply super-smooth normal motion. But you can drop every other frame to get 30p. When the shutter speed is the same, there is no difference between 60p converted to 30p (using frame dropping) and native 30p. The GH1 records 720p30 using a version of MJPEG, instead of the AVCHD used for 1080p24 and 720p60. The quality difference between the two codecs is debated.

Thanks again, ydgmdlu. Looks like you have both cameras, so I should ask directly if you feel your T2i's 1080 mode looks better than what comes out
of the GH1 in it's 24P mode, or even it's best 720 mode.

Back to the 60 FPS question, do you happen to know if Avid software accepts a 720 60P GH1 file on import into a 1080i project and if so, does it playback at 100% speed with each a different image?
