Movie dialogue that should be retired.

Just to be the voice of dissent / to temper some of these - remember there's a kernel of truth in every cliché.

There actually are grieving mothers in every war.

And divorce rate is high among cops.

Though not necessarily due to worrying over the danger as mentioned above, probably due to feeling the relationship the cop has with the partner is more intimate than the marriage, the cop bringing a way of dealing with criminals and the stress of the job into the home, substance abuse due to the stress of the job, being abusive due to the stress of the job, being emotionally closed off due to the stress of the job, etc.

saying "Look..." before an explination.

does anyone actually say that? i think i just say "ok..." or something, but never "Look"...unless i'm saying "Look...over there at that homeless man beating himself to death with a shampoo bottle!"

Retire the whole Saving Private Ryan ripoff: The character is lost in a daze and/or flashback, it sounds like everything's underwater and some kind of sound swell/crescendo snaps the person out of their daydream. "Walt? Walt? Are you listening to me?"

Well, this one is a general one to the cops shows...even more prevalent in the C.S.I. shows. It's their over-use of cop lingo. Like the word "Vic" for victim. Or "Perp" for perpetrator. "Juvie" or "Juv" for juvenile, etc. ...We get it, its a cop show. But the use of these abbreviations just make the production seem too self-aware, like "look at me. I'm a cop show and I'm saying cop words."

1) Don't forget the newer one: unsub (unknown subject).

2) Let's talk about the CSI shows, and how CSI officers are not the first ones on the scene. Ever. They're called in after the fact. Yet, time and time again, the main characters in all the CSI series show up to a call, guns drawn, and then create the scene they will subsequently have to process.

3. Salty veteran always hating their newly assigned rookie or "rook."
4. Salty veteran telling the "rook" to stay outta his way and watch and learn.

Oddly enough, that reminds me of some film crews I have worked with...

Hell, we can start an entire thread just on bad cop cliches.
1. Bad Coffee
2. Addressing one another by last name.
3. Salty veteran always hating their newly assigned rookie or "rook."
4. Salty veteran telling the "rook" to stay outta his way and watch and learn.
5. Police captain with ulcer.
6. Police captain eating antacid tables.
7. Police captain who is very temperamental
8. Police captain who likes to use the phrase "I busted my ass" a lot. As in, "Mahoney. I busted my ass to get to where I am and I'm not about to get sent back to traffic detail over a God Damn hunch!"
9. Police captain who always caves to the protagonist by giving him 24 more hours. Apparently, all major crimes don't need weeks or years to be solved. They just need a final 24 hours.
10. And, please don't take this as racist, just something I've noticed...most Police Chiefs are black.
11. Witnesses who do not stop what they are doing when they are being questioned by homicide detectives. I mean, they are HOMICIDE detectives. Put down the crate of fish already and answer their questions. At least look nervous.
12. Witnesses who possess one of 3 popular vocations. A. Dock worker B. Bartender C. Whore
13. Ex-wife or Girlfriend who left him because of the dangers of his job or that he was married to his cop-life and she couldn't take it anymore.
14.

Feel free to add...

14. There's always an old cop who gets shot just a few days before retirement.
15. Danny Glover is always getting too old for this shi*.

I can't add anything beyond wow, that's good.

oh, waitaminute...

...soldier in the field - preferably a farm boy - who shows around pictures of his girl/fiancee/young wife/young pregnant wife back home. Yeah, we *all* know what's going to happen, to him.

Except that's the wrong genre. Okay, well, now it's the beginning of a different genre.

someone's gonna jump on this idea and make the sickest modern silent film...though, sadly the new gen won't tolerate it, but it'll be done through passion for the art, and filmmakers everywhere will wonder why the art died. maybe that's another thread.
