Movie Crop Function for 7D?

Would it be worth hoping that Canon might eventually release firmware for the 7D that includes a Movie Crop function like on the T2i?

I've got a 100-400mm lens and a 2X teleconverter and can only imagine the fun I could have on windless days and nights.

How much would you pay for that feature? $799? :)

Hehe. No. I've thought about the T2i and everytime I do, I'm sure I want to stick with my 7D for now.

But just like 5D owners looked with jealously on their 7D counterparts with 24p, which they have now gotten through firmware, I'm wondering if Movie Crop might take the same backwards route.

I’m still trying to figure out what’s the benefit of having that crop mode. It’s low resolution. I could see if it produced a true HD 1920x1080 resolution image how helpful that would be (for wide shots with no aliasing etc.). But given its current capability….why?

Yeah, it would be more of a "for fun" function of the camera, perhaps not so much for serious projects.

I think it would be fun to be able to squeeze crazy zoom equivalents out of my 100-400mm lens with 2x teleconverter. Obviously you're compromising by only getting SD, and then relying quite heavily on the resolving power of the lens you're using, but I'd rather have the option to crop than not.

If nothing else, celestial videos are sort of fun. The Moon for starters, but I think I could get Jupiter and its big moons and maybe Saturn from a movie crop. They're visible with powerful binoculars.
