Movcam Odyssey 7Q bracket mini-review (lots of pictures)

Thanks Paul for this quick feedback !!

Perfect it's like I was in mind about the Dremel protips !

Many many thanks, I will order it :)

You mean the hood? It should fit fine with the Westside AV or the Convergent Design hoods. The Movcam is behind the Odyssey and the hoods are attached on the sides.

I talk to as many of the third party developers as possible to encourage them not to interfere with one another. Makes everybody's lives easier.

I wonder if the Movcam mount fits with the Westside protector?

You mean their sun hood?

I think it will fit with all edge-fitting sun hoods pretty much - it doesn't protrude around the edges, just sits on the back.

I have the CD sunhood on order, so hopefully will know soon.

I mean the small plastic frame that the hood attaches to. More of a protector/ mini hood I guess! Looks like there might be some interference at bottom edges near connectors. Will try though as am liking the overall look and feel from your fotos. Along with Movcam cage that i use already, should tie things up nicely.

Like Mitch says - and from the pics on Westside's site - looks like it'd all play nicely together :) Can't see anything that would interfere.

Any issues with running just a single arm? I'd like to stay as compact as possible but want to avoid any kind of interferences.

Also, does anyone know if the arms are available in black? B&H and 16x9 sell them for $90 while CVP has them for $61 but $30 to ship to the states:-/

Thanks

Single arm works well. You are restricted to mounting up top but that's the best place for me anyway. Been using my setup a bit and very pleased indeed :)

i think the rosette extension arms only come in silver. Looks good though, even on a black rig.

Lanparte rosette rail adapter looks ok. The only thing I'd be a little wary of is if they're fully compatible with the movcam version. They probably are but the rosettes on the camtree are rubbish and don't work/lock with the movcam rosettes. Let me know when you get them.

Got it today, fits perfectly and actually seems to be quite high quality. Nicely surprised.

Nice, just ordered off Amazon. Lanparte definitely make some shoddy products at times but they also deliver on some as well.

I love the hard stop follow focus. Pulls better than my fathers $2k Arri MFF-2.

16x9 does not yet have all the components needed to put together an Odyssey 7Q system as referenced in this thread. The do have the cage for the 7Q, at $225 USD, compared to $165 from the UK source on this article. I wonder what the UK firm would charge to ship it to the U.S.

I have the Lanparte follow focus and it is awesome and has a killer pricepoint. Looks like the Lanparte rail/rosette adapter is a bit less expensive than the Movcam.

Dave - sounds like that price might be for the version of the bracket with the power plate and power distribution? The O7Q bracket on its own has a part number of 306-0218. Might be worth checking with them as it's a brand new part (I had the first one in the UK I think) and there may be some confusion as the power distribution version is the part that was being advertised first.

CVP do ship internationally I believe but I'm sure it'd be more expensive with shipping, taxes and duty (if charged).

I was thinking about ways to modify the Movcam bracket to allow free tilt adjustment of the O7Q. I just bought a rosette ring from smallrig:

http://www.coollcd.com/smallrig-rosette-arri_p1273.html

I thought that adding one of these between the rosettes would allow the tilt movement whilst still being secure. It works fairly well although as expected, it can cause the thumb screw to untighten. But generally it works well if you keep the thumb screw tightened. It's only upward tilts that could losten, so at least with the way the O7Q is mounted, gravity will keep it tight on it's own to some extent.

Maybe even better would be two rosette rings back to back so there's no wear on the rosette (although I think that's not much of an issue.)

I did try a hard rubber tap washer instead of the rosette ring but it wasn't very secure - the weight of the O7Q was too much and it was wobbly. A solid nylon washer (or two) might work though if they're big enough (penny washer size).

Here are a couple of pics:

The rosette is loose initially but secures and locks in place on one side when tightened. The smooth side moves against the rosette on the arm or O7Q depending which way around you place it.

Ideally, I really want an adjustable clutch mechanism like this:

http://www.gecko-cam.com/sales/brands/tangohead/blue-handle-system/

Mod-21 near the bottom of that page - although I've not found any info on that yet and how it works. I think it's pretty expensive too.

or stick in two rosettes as I mentioned so there's a flat to flat junction. That might be better.
