mounting solutions for EVF

I will try it. Because I know how to make it work, I already have the pieces. :cheesy:

well..only work for folk that has tool to modify, drill new hole. Not all of us has that tool. lolz. Man, i can't even use the berkey plate on top of the cage. Yes, they have a whole bunch of hole but they are not align since it was design for MCS parts.

You're missing how this is to be done. The MCS bracket that would hold the rod would NOT be used with the Berkey plate. Another one would be used.

If you do have a Berkey plate, there's a few ways you can get a rod (either 15 or 19) connected. One is the Berkey clamp he sells, which goes right to his cheese plate pattern. Or you can use a Zacuto clamp like I already have:

Do you get how this works now?

Dang. Well, would need to check screw spacing, but the Element Technica might work... http://elementtechnica.mybigcommerce.com/evf-tube-clamp/

I'd say there's cheaper and lighter ways to get it done. I have a Zacuto clamp doing the same job right now, half the price, smaller, and lighter, but it CAN spin on the Berkey plate if it loosens up. I have mine monkey-gripped down pretty good.

You mention using a 15mm rod as an option. How are you attaching the 15mm rod to the EVF assembly? - Much appreciated - seriously considering going this direction - preferably with the upcoming TVLogic EVF.

I'm about to head home from filming a doc in Haiti and I rigged together a EVF mount for my Zacuto for going hand held with various bits that I mostly already had. Before the trip I tried just using my Noga arm and the biggest problem was repeating the perfect position of the EVF, getting it far enough forward and not moving when getting bumped.

From the photos below you'll see what I used but it started with the Berkey top plate and a zacuto 15mm stud thing that accepts male threaded 15mm rods. After 9 days of abuse, bumps, etc. the EVF never slipped on me once, rock solid. When I wasnt shooting hand held, I used my noga arm on the other side of the plate and extended up to get the EVF close to my face when shooting on sticks.

The one catch is that unless you already own some of these pieces your looking at around $250-300 with out the Berkey plate or the Noga.

On a separate note and this is more about the Zacuto EVF. While I've owned it since they came out and have been more then happy with it, the snap on z-finder and eye cup are NOT made for vigorous field use. I have the EVF flip and had to resort to gaf taping the z-finder to the EVF to preventing it from falling off when slightly bumped. The eye cup "peels" of the ridge on the eye piece pretty easily as well. Picking the mask, anti-fog film and the eye cup out of the dirt is not something I want to deal with in the field. Probably will resort to zip tieing or taping it on as well. I will say the EVF itself seems very durable and takes a beating and the battery's long life is great.

*I could of prob achieved this set up by using the additional Berkey front plate the Nate shows in his photo but it blocks my view of the f stop on my Nikkors and Zeiss that have rings.

That looks like a solution I could work with...

What specific Zacuto parts are you using? I'll be at Abel tomorrow and will just pick everything up.

Here's the list:
1 -Zicro quick release mount -You'll need a long enough 1/4-20 screw to come up from under the Berkey plate and into the stud mount. The stud has a set screw of sorts but I blue loctite'd the 1/4-20 and tightened down the stud with a small adjustable wrench.

1 -3.5" male/female rod

1 -4.5" female/female rod

1 or 2 Z-Mount II's. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/587992-REG/Zacuto_Z_MO_2_Z_MO_2_Z_Mount_II.html

Two if you want to substitute the Zwivel. I had a Zwivel already from a dslr rig but the problem with it is when you loosen the lever, two connections loosen and can lead to the evf dropping, hence the big screw in the vertical rod. At the same time I never touched it after setting it up the first time. You could also use two of Redrock's Micro mount and save about $80.

1 -3" female/female rod

What I like about this set up is you can adjust all three axis depending on how far you want the evf forward, how high, angle, etc. and most importantly, it doesn't move once set.

woodencam braket on the berkey extention plate
just ask Brian at berkey to do the holes for you or you buy a cross clamp from him!
Magic

Just saw the Wooden tonight at Abel in conjunction with the Berkey extension plate. Very sturdy and a great solution. Decided to pass, however, since I'd rather put that money toward a slider. Will make do for a while with the Noga arm.

Problem with the wooden bracket on a smallHD EVF is that the cables come in on the bottom where the mounting plate is.
I want to try flipping my small HD and mounting from an arm of some kind on top. Until now you could only flip the cameras image - not menus but supposedly the Beta software I just downloaded will allow flipping menus also. The damn thing should just have a 1/4-20 screw hole on top.

Another problem is that the viewfinder gets in the way of screwing in a Noga arm, but I think I can finagle that one.

with the wooden cam you can remove the L bracket and you will be able to use the side hole on the small hd
i did the same withe the tvlogic 5.6 but to give a bit of spacing i used 2 manfrotto adaptor 1- 015 3/8 female to male 1/4 20 2-148KN Reducing Bushing Set - 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20
that way i have a little space between the bracket and the monitor.

Damn,
Olivier until you mentioned it I never thought of mounting to the side of the small HD --DUH!
Thanks man, that makes everything much easier and actually looks like an arm might be sufficient. Can't believe I've missed that.
