Mounting options for external recorder/O7q+

Hi All,

Just wondering what people are using to mount their external recorders onto 15mm rails?
I'm putting together a rig that will have the recorder on rails behind the camera (so it will act as a counterweight for shoulder balancing too). It's be nice to have the ability to tilt up/down but I won't need it to rotate at all. I imagine a lot of people are using a friction arm to mount their O7q's & Shoguns directly to the camera/handle, but I'm not sure what options there are for mounting on rails?

Thanks Pythonman, your thread is one of the ones I'm keeping an eye on as I plan my build.

One question about your rig: Is it possible to duplicate the camera's internal LCD info in your viewfinder, while sending a clean feed to the Odyssey via SDI? Or does the same clean signal have to go out on both the SDI and HDMI from the camera?

It would be great to be able to see the FS700's screen info in the external viewfinder.

If you are outputting RAW from the SDI jack, as when you are in the Odyssey 4KRAW2HD mode, that is a clean signal, even when the viewfinder data is being added to the SDI/HDMI outputs.

So Ericjurg - can I confirm that I am reading your post correctly:

It is possible to display camera info on an EVF (eg Alphatron, Kinotehnik, etc) connected via HDMI, while simultaneously sending a RAW stream to the O7q via the SDI jack?

Does this include the cameras focus zoom function (ie: can I use the FS700 handgrip to punch in and check focus with an external EVF?)

I use smallrig bracket design for O7Q - total cost bout $85
here's the pictures with fingerprints :-)

It WILL display the data overlays on the external viewfinder, if connected from the FS700's HDMI output, whilst sending a clean raw signal to the Odyssey, you just need make sure overlays are selected to display to all outputs in the menu (don't worry it still won't send to the raw signal). But to answer your other question, the punch-in zoom function for checking focus only works on the FS700s LCD screen, it has no effect on a connected EVF. Hence why I chose the Kinotehnik because it has the optional joystick that offers the same function for the EVF, and I have that small joystick clamped in a convenient position for my left hand.

Thanks Jonathon. I like the idea of not taking my hand off the rig at all in order to do a focus check (especially if you need to do it midway through a take), which is why I was asking the question. I might have to check out the Kinotehnik - previously I'd been leaning towards the Alphatron.
