Oh, and Bill Nighy is wonderful too, even in horrible movies like Underworld.

And Liam Neeson is always good, but probably not underrated.

Alfre Woodard is similarly consistent, if underutilized (the Forgotten? UGH!)

If you guys haven't seen that film, you really should. It's one of the better Indie films ever produced, and every actor in it really shines, some unconventionally so...check out Denis Leary and Jack Black!

A friend of mine worked on it and another was one of the supporting cast, and they both loved the experience and were proud to be part of the effort.

I think Ethan Hawke is underrated.
And maybe Tom Cruise is a bit overrated, but I think that has to do with his status.

There's a lotta good comments here. Notice how we're much more polarized about male actors than females? Check the agreement factor in the corresponding 'Best Actress' thread. :D

My thoughts: Brad Pitt. He's gorgeous, and the guy can act, and outstandingly so. Fight Club? End of story.

My problem with this topic is that 'underrated' and 'overrated' are relative terms, comparing what work the actor in question has already done, and what they might be capable of in the future.

Christian Bale. Now THAT guy is a method actor! He's a bit stiff, like Harrison Ford, but I have grooved to every performance he's done, and I can't wait to see him play Skeletor in his new upcoming movie. That is obsession.

I love Mr. Depp, but I hate to say it, I think he is past his prime. he just doesn't look hungry to me anymore. We'll see. He USED to be underrated, but he's gotten so many parts now that, well, he isn't.

Afleck is overrated. I personally hate Matt Damon, but that guy really can act.

Here's a couple of totally underrated actors, in my opinion:

David Suchet. Played Poirot, and received the OBE for it (Officer of the British Empire). Not a Knighthood, but one step below. I saw him play a terrorist in some no-name movie and he was utterly convincing.

John Rhys-Davies. Now here's a guy who has rarely had a leading role, but done MANY supporting roles, and extremely well. He is capable of so much more. I actually met him. Nice guy, but completely insecure.

Viggo Mortensen has been working hard for years in this business. Way underrated.

Overrated?

Pierce Brosnan. I hate it, but I think his best years are behind him, so I gotta go with overrated these days. He could still surprise me, and I really like the guy, but...

DiCaprio. Need I say more?

But I think my all-time favorite overrated actor is:

Gerard Depardieu. I mean, WTF?!!!! Why is this guy in front of a camera, ever? Who actually sees anything worth reproducing?

And yet, he has a body of work?!:

For me one of the most underrated is Bently Mitchum who is an excellent actor without the "big break" yet.

Overrated Tom Cruise!

Someone mentioned Mark Hammil. Part of the reason he dropped out of site was because of the accident that burned his face so badly. But I saw a lot of him when I was a casting associate for commercials and voice overs. He simply took his talent to the microphone rather than to the camera and has made a very good living doing so. I saw him for at least 85% of the commercials we cast.

Julia Roberts, totally overrated, I'd love to see her act. Kirsten Dudnst, whoever made her Mary Jane, got me baffled.

Underrated, Bruce definitely.

I have never cared much for Nicolas Cage, he just seems to have the most boring personality.

William H. Macy is underrated. The guy is an unbelieveable actor.
I watched that movie "The Wool Cap" he was great in that.

Hey someone else who saw door to door! He was excellent in that! I was hurting for him, having to act that way the whole movie...I missed the ending though... :-[
