Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

I mean, the people who I think think are top actors and other people think they are crappy. So I put them in the same list, as they are top actors in which most people think they are underrated.

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

I like Brad Pitt. I thought he was awesome in Fight Club and Seven.

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

I'm suprised at how many people are saying Brad Pitt is overrated. I really like him.

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

Underrated (except for that they're rich and famous):
- Steve Buscemi (Desperado, The Big Lebowski, Resevoir Dogs)
- Jeff Bridges (or El Dudereno if you're not into the whole brevity thing)
- Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon)
- Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects, American Beauty)

Overrated:
Keanu Reeves (doesn't seem intellegent either)

Who do you guys think are overrated/underrated directors?

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

Before you dismiss Brad Pitt, you need to dust off your copy of True Romance and remember the Floyd. It's all about the Floyd.

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

Sorry Mr Tech

But I have to stick up for Brad in Troy

I thought he was a very beleivable kick ass warrior (Achilees) and when hector killed his young cousin I thought- man, you better run for the hills

I agree with ya, that he was awsome in snatch

Also Eric Bana was really good as hector, it was good to see him move on from Hulk (which was an extreme disapointment)

For anyone who is interested to learn;

Eric Bana started out his career as a comedian on an aussie skit show (funny send ups of tv shows commercials movies etc) and he was hillarious!

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

Christian Bale is underated. I just saw "The Machinist" and you gatta hand it to him for that transformation. I think Michael Wincott is also a great character actor.

Troy blew, I mean they totally butchered a literary classic, and one of the best war stories of all time.

Hahahaha :D

I always think of your initials at "T"aking "C"are of .....
I wanna say "Business" but since its only TC, you must either take care of EVERYTHING, or NOTHING.

Same here.

I don't care for every movie that he has been in. But I would certainly disagree with the people on here who say that he "ruined" Troy. If anything I thought he was perfectly cast in that film.

He was damn good in Seven, Fight Club and Twelve Monkeys as well.

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

I have to also add that I think Brad Pitt is a very capable actor. The guy really is more then a pretty face, and a trip down the IMDB database will reveal that he's been working at this longer then most people think. Because he's an attractive sex-symbol male, people tend to forget his acting chops, but he certainly has them.

As far as Troy or any other big budget film blowing...? Really guys, name any summer blockbuster that was ever thought to be good in it's inception, production, or critical reception.

The LOTR series was quite an exception, and I thought the two spidermen were considerably good considering the obvious pitfalls, but the vast majority of films with budgets over 60 million simply stink. They're designed to fill seats and sell popcorn. Actors do them because it's exposure and a solid paycheck, studios create them because they bankroll the oscar offerings, and directors shoot them because they're easy to parlay into the lucrative part-time advertising market.

Pick any big subject and you'll find a crappy film about it. Titanic, Pearl Harbor, Troy, Alexander...all high-grossing stink bombs.

I just wish people (in the acting and directing worlds) would stop citing pacino and streep as their only acting inspiration. It's tired and conventional.

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

Also, someone above noted Billy Crudup in Jesus' Son...

If you guys haven't seen that film, you really should. It's one of the better Indie films ever produced, and every actor in it really shines, some unconventionally so...check out Denis Leary and Jack Black!

A friend of mine worked on it and another was one of the supporting cast, and they both loved the experience and were proud to be part of the effort.

It's really a very well directed film.

Depends on my mood. ;)

Everytime someone starts a thread about time code I get confused for a second (ie "Help! TC Problem!")

It's funny because in real life (that is, my life away from the board) I do go by TC, I've gone by it ever since I was a baby, because my parents were Top Cat fans. Maybe that's why I'm still into cartoons. :P

J Barnes, I think you hit the nail on the head regarding Brad Pitt (Very valid points)

I don't know if they were all summer;

Gladiator, Terminator 2, Kill bill, Matrix reloaded, Independence day, Men in black, Pirates of the Caribean, Harry Potter, Moulin Rouge, Shrek, Finding Nemo

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

Out of your list, there are perhaps two films that could be said to be "well acted" blockbusters.

Moulin Rouge was a bit of a surprise success and Shrek and Finding Nemo are animated films.

DOn't get me wrong, there's some fun films in your list...but great films? Not so much. Thrill rides? Yes...well executed? Some certainly so... but did anyone make their acting resume by starring in one of those films?

(Depp being the obvious exception, but he already had an impressive resume before Pirates)

My point isn't that blockbusters stink as a rule...it's that no one expects good or great acting in them. Actors don't do them for the amazing script. They don't take the roles because they're challenging and unconventional...they do them for the paycheck. It's pure entertainment, and thus I don't really think it's fair to hang the success or lack thereof of any blockbuster film on the acting.

Tommy Lee Jones is a pretty good actor, but did anyone find substantial acting in "Men in Black"?

Re: Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

Upon reading all the posts here, apparently there are 2 catagories of talent in Hollywood: 1)"Entertainers" with charisma and 2)Actors with actual talent.

In context of this post, here are some examples of "Entertertainers" who are charismatic and put asses in seats, but aren't really acting: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, and whoever "teen pretty boy" flavor of the month who will mean nothing in Hollywood 2 years from now(except in b-movies). Actors(who are outstanding, just not enough charisma to put asses in seats as a lead): John C. Reilly, Vincent D'Onofrio, Michael Biehn, Sean Bean, Lee Tergesen(one of my personal favs) and of course there a thousands more.

Of course there are those who fit in both(bring in box office dough and have mad skillz): Robert DeNiro, Sam Jackson, Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise(in his latter roles, anyways), Brad Pitt(he won my respect), Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks

Catergory of "once did great acting, now is only an entertainer(and flopping at that)": Ben Affleck(once did great acting in Chasing Amy, now look at the rest of the crap that he does) :'(
