most amazing wedding video

I must say like most of you we have done our share of weddings to pay the bills and I try to stay away from them unless they are unique, like exotic weddings or really artsy or creative. But I just wanted to share the vision of my best friend for his wedding next weekend, I will be a camera op at. OK here we go...

4 HVX
2 Steadicams
15' Jib
Helicopter
Wireless "groom cam" Mounted on his tie!
everyone speaking at the wedding will have a lav attached to an Iriver

The jib will be during the wedding following the bride down the isle
the helicopter will be after obviously getting footage of them leaving
one Steadi during the wedding and the both at the reception.

Lets just say I'm glad I"m not editing this! but I cant wait to put it on my reel!

Sounds cool and should be a great event.

Though that is the major reason I avoid weddings. People, especially the Bride, have these massive fantasies of what their wedding will look like and they expect some Hollywood production. No normal wedding videographer can live up to these expectations. The industry has gotten really out of hand. (Sorry, not directed at you and your friends; it really is a cool gift)

Add to that the fact that I worked as a waiter throughout my teens (mostly weddings) and you can see where my hatred for the things comes from.

Jees...

Sounds like you're filming a huge stunt or something! Is the groom going to drive a motorcycle down the isle, off a ramp, do a backflip and superman, fly through a ring of fire and land perfectly next to the alter?

Sounds awesome. :)

You guys might want to film a feature during breaks in action...you have enough equipment for it.

They say the helicopter scene in I Love A Man In Uniform is what got it sold in the first place...the rest of the film wasn't exactly riveting.

I hate to ask a stupid question... but is everybody else down with all of this? Or do they expect that they can have a normal wedding... running straight through... and you guys will just happen to catch the action and turn it into something great?

A good wedding videographer is about timing... as much as outright camera skill... and sometimes there are chaotic and unpredicted moments.

I'm assuming that the wedding party is already willing and agreeable to letting somebody control the pace of things? As in... the band isn't cuing the bride, but rather somebody else is cuing the band and YOU guys at the same time?

All I'm saying is that I hope they are all into this and not thinking that the tons of coverage will get everything without requiring any flexibility on their part. With FOUR cams you'd almost HAVE to get everything you want... but the pinnacle shots require timing from just one perspective... like jibbing down the aisle... or the heli...

I'm probably mentioning the obvious... but since nobody else asked, I'm genuinely curious.

Sounds cool, but I wonder how the clergy will feel about a jib in his/her church, or how much the photographers will love having a jib in the background of their photos.

Sorry if I am just shitting on the dream, but part of the line of work is cooperating with the other personel involved.

I always bring my jib to weddings. And yeah...the church staff always LOOOOOVE it too. Bet then again...i'm in L.A. Just got home from a consult actually. Bridal Expo this weekend. Tough here where we have several companies that shoot on 35mm.

To your minds at ease it was ALL the bride and grooms idea of what to shoot and how much camera equiptment to use. And as much as I want to yell cut in the middle of the wedding it will not be like that. We will TRY to stay out of everyones way.

sounds like you are trying to recreate the wedding sequence from the most recent fantastic four movie.

With four cameras there's so much coverage that I would think it would be hard for you to miss anything... and since the bride and groom are in on it then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I just wanted to say that most weddings are like shooting a reality show, even though it's an organized event, within that event things don't seem to be very well organized and they just sort of happen as they happen. Jibs and helicopters are used in reality shows for establishing place in an interesting way... or for setting up action with heightened (pun intended) drama. You'll notice that in any reality show that uses jibs they don't use 'em during the event... only during the build-up.

I wasn't trying to discourage you in any way... but it sounds like you have a lot of tools that are normally used for very specific set-up shots... as opposed to covering "reality"... which is why I raised the point about having somebody who's communicating with you... that is controlling the action (like Director, AD, etc.)

With FOUR cams you would almost HAVE to get it...

Also... obviously you gotta' post some footage from this later on! :cheesy:

Yea I agree weedings are like reality, but the mother of the bride is like the evil director, lol the groom is meeting with all us camera guys before the wedding to go over a shot list so we won't all be just getting whatever, oh and don't worry as soon as i get the footage i'll be posting it.
