Mortal Kombat!! 2011?

But you know what, someone made a good point about not having any stories outside of the video game for a movie, that is somewhat true, but who ever saw Blood Sport? I wouldn't mine a Street Fighter Movie or Mortal Kombat movie being done in that form, because after all, we all play the games because of the one on one combats, and what better way to adapt it then actual one on one fights.

Yep. One on one fights and the whole tournament aspect of the games would need to be a big part of the action scenes of a proper Mortal Kombat film. That is why I mentioned the martial arts films that come out of Hong Kong's film industry being the type of direction a MK live action film should try to go. If not with every fight scene, at least with some. Obviously something like Jax vs. Goro would be less acrobatic, but with fights like Lui Kang vs. Shang Tsung or Scorpion vs. Sub Zero I expect to see them flipping and flying all over the place.

A film like Hero is a good example because it looks like it is happening due to the effects and wire work being done well, but the fact that they are flying around plus all the stylized colors give it a somewhat fantastical feeling. Not that I think a MK movie would have to be exactly the same as Hero, just that it has that sort of magical feel I would like to see in some of the fights. Maybe in Outworld the gravity is weaker or something, allowing them to jump higher and fly around? MK ain't science fiction so who cares about the laws of physics in this case?

The good news is that even though the abundance of guns in this MK web series is annoying so far, they did have the Kano vs. Jax fight. I would guess they will move closer to that kind of focus with the action as the series progresses.

Speaking of the games, do any of you guys plan on getting the new game next week? After many years, their bringing the old 2D fighting style back.
I got the new one and am enjoying it. I am not a huge fighting game fan beyond MK and Street Fighter. Even then, the MK games haven't been that good after Ultimate MK 3 when they moved away from the classic 2D style. I also liked Tekken back in the day when there were still arcades.

Played the new MK today. Have to say it's really cool! Back to the roots: 2D and lot's of blood and gore :) Quite impressed so far! And as always Scorpion is far too powerful for my taste.

Sub Zero, Scorpion & Raiden, when ever I picked those 3, I was unbeatable. Kitana always gave me problems, she was tough to beat. I hated that damn Fan.

Hmmm. New Episode, the director/creator pretty much apologizes at the beginning of the episode with text...

I guess to each his own.

Raiden is played by an average joe of average height with a beard. Doesn't work for me. Raiden should be tall and imposing. He's the god of Thunder after all.

Yup, I saw that. It's gonna be hard to satisfy both the hardcore fans and people who knows nothing about the game. Basically he's trying to keep it balanced by bringing it in a real world sorta speak. Though I wish it was all about the mortal kombat world, I'm not mad at him for the way he balances it.

I've been faithfully watching every week. The best episode by far is Johnny Cage, and he was my least favorite character in the whole game.

Can't wait to see how Sub-Zero is introduced. So far I haven't been pissed but if they screw him up by making him some dude who drives an icecream truck who accidently freezes himself while replacing the Freon...I'm going to be pissed.

Lets use trademarked character names from popular game franchise and lets rape brutally another fanbase with our "vision"

Its how i see it ,this is not mk ,this is not how mk was presented to fans through many many years so why change this now ,whats the point ?Dont have the money to film it they way it meant to be filmed then DON'T TOUCH IT.Thank You.

It's an adaptation of the game into a web series. It was a video game, then they adapted it to a web series format.
By definiton of the word you can't adapt something without changing it.

So its better to screw up by not making it good by making it EXACTLY like it was presented to fans in original version ? Fans liked it that way so there is no logical reason to change anything at all IMO.EVery game based movie suffers from the same thing - not being true to source material.
How many times until writers will learn - Dont change anything and use source material, be respectful.
Latest episode with scorpion and sub zero looks like its being written by 12 years old writer. This is so sad.No respect to the game.

Haven't watched the most recent couple of episodes yet (I like to watch them in groups), but I do think that unlike a major film, a web series based on a property has a much better opprotunity to adhere to a source material than would something that has multi-million dollars at stake. A web series (the most successful ones, it seems), don't much worry about appealing to a wide range of audiences. So for Mortal Kombat, it seems like the logical thing to do would be to give the Mortal Kombat fans pretty near exactly what they want (e.g. what they got from the game).

Personally I'm not a huge MK fan. The first and second games were fun when I was a kid -- didn't play any after that. I didn't feel that there was any "story" behind any of it. Just some dudes with powers kicking the crap out of one another for domination. Maybe its history grew and became more complex over time, which is what the die hard MK fans would want from this series (I'm guessing).

There's no way a video game film can cater to such a small percentage of moviegoers as would be the gamers themselves, but in a webseries I think they could do it.
