I talked to Bill Long at Vistek today and he mentioned that Sony Canada still "debating" about this (what ever that means...). I will wait for their answer first of course... As far as road trip? Are we eligible at all, being that we bought our cameras out of US?...

Yeah not sure if camera out of usa... I will know more soon. I don't need it, but for $899 usd buy it just for dynamic range alone.

I would be hesitant about doing that without a Carnet. Customs people have sweeping powers of search and seizure. They play by different rules. Of course you are free to do as you wish. :)

Amen to that. Definately don't want to cross the border without proper paperwork.

I read somewhere today that to get the offer in the US you have to prove you purchased the camera in the US of A first, before dropping your unit off at an authorized Sony Service Center. This information came directly from Sony USA in a Communique with the criteria and steps to purchase laid out in print.

Andrew, not sure what you are talking about, there is nothing illegal aboiut making a purchase in the USA and bringing back to Canada. You buy something you pay tax on it bringing it in. Before you go in another country with your equipment you ensure you do paperwork to prove where you bought it.

If US Sony won't do upgrade for cameras bought outside USA that is another story.

Sony - Belgium (which in reality is the same as SONY 'The Netherlands') has been approached about this. It always takes them a few weeks to follow some US rebate initiative. But in the end ... they usually do. Same story with the XDCAM unleashed rebate ... only took them 2 months to come up with something similar.

Just got this response from Sony Teaneck today:

Thanks for the inquiry. We will keep your paperwork on file. Once we received the appropriate parts for the upgrade, we will immediately call or send you an email for further instruction.

Looks like they either don't have it yet or aren't doing it yet?

yeah, they basically quit responding to me with useful info. I just thought it was odd that they need "parts" for a firmware upgrade....I think they didn't think it was going to get as much notice as it did, and they weren't prepared for the response.

I really wouldn't understand how Sony can offer this to one country and no other? That is something crazy in my view.

Got a reply today,
Over here in the Netherlands Sony claims that it was supposed to be a worldwide offer to be released in April but somehow the US put it out two months earlier.
at the moment the European marketing honchos are working at a solution.
Looking forward to what they come up with!

I just had my F3 upgraded today at Sony in Teaneck NJ and from what I gather they are "back-ordered" now on the S-Log firmware upgrade.
I don't know how that effects the February-March lifetime of this "offer", but if you want this done I'd get in the "queue" now.
The service centre personnel were extremely helpful and very efficient. I was in at 8.30am and out an hour later heading back South on i95 with the S-Log installed. This may not be their normal turnaround time though, I had an emergency crop up when I was at the office and they dealt with my camera quickly so I could leave ASAP....For which I'm grateful.
One clue I will offer is that before you send or take your F3 into Sony update it to the latest camera firmware . The camera firmware is upgraded to V1.31 prior to the installation of the S-Log update and this can add to the time that your camera is on the bench. As my F3 was already at V1.31 I think that made this morning's process quite a bit quicker.
You will lose your personal camera settings with this upgrade as the F3 is "re-set" during the process.

Now to learn how to use S-Log effectively, another "learning curve" !
