More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Wow, more ass shots please

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

There's lots of T&A shots on the actual show.   Canadian viewers can watch it this week on OLN.   The show is Tan Lines, and these stills were taken from the Oahu episode I shot in September.
One of the segments is the "Miss Hawaiian Tropic Survival Challenge."   Check it out if you really want to see some hot stuff.   The CU of the girl in that one shot is from that segment.

For the bluest skies, I try to have the sun 90 degrees in either direction from the lens and then tune in the polarizer until the sky is as blue as possible.
As for the barrel distortion on the hotel - I was using the wide angle adapter.   The shot actually starts on the beach and pans/tilts up to the hotel - so the distortion isn't very noticable with the camera move.    I can post more shots from this episode if you guys want.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

As far as my blue sky and boat, sun was setting behind that ridge at about 90 degrees from me as well. I WB off the rail using the halogens form the fishing boat.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Wait? the beach shots are actually for a OLN TV show? What name? What time? I've got DirecTV in the US. Can I catch it here? The CU of the chic looks AWSOME. Part from the resolution, it looks like a down-rezed film frame. WOW!! Anything special done to that shot?

BTW, post more! but I'd like to see the actual show!

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

The secrets to a good strong blue sky are:

1) shoot away from the sun.
2) stop down.

1) The sky is bluest with the sun at your back. The closer you turn to the sun, the more color you lose. Shooting into the sun will result in a white sky.

2) The more stopped-down you are, the more saturated the color becomes. John's shot was successful because the foreground subject was a white boat, with lights on it, allowing him to stop down some for proper exposure. Each stop down allows the sky to pop bluer and bluer.

I'm not a big fan of polarizers for sky color. The polarizer is a brilliant filter for reflections, whether glass surfaces or water surfaces, but for sky color it just seems to be somewhat "artificial" -- it drains the life out of the sky, I think. And the effect is unpredictable -- if you execute a pan, your sky color will shift noticeably. I've always bought circular polarizers for every camera I've ever owned, but I just don't end up using them. To each his own, I guess.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

I wish I had light on those birds. Could have made a real nice clip.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Thanks Barry. I admit, I was not sure exactly how I did it! Now, with that information, I have learned why.

OLN is on DirectTV at channel 608, but they don't ever seem to carry any "fresh" programming on the US feed.  (Lots of Bull Riding all the time!)
For Canadian viewers, the show "TAN LINES" is on OLN Monday at 9:30PM, Tues 1:30AM, and then re-run Saturday 10:30PM, and Sunday 2:30AM.    It is just a travel show with nice scenics and usually a bikini contest.   It is kind of like E!'s "Wild On" but with a little more class.

No... I don't think I even had any filters on that one.   It was just before magic hour, and I had the WB set to 5600K preset.    I was using a 1/200th of a second shutter for the sharp image and 1/8th ND, so I could open up for a short DOF.

I'll post some more stills for you below.
I plan on buying some more space on my server soon, so I'll try to get some clips uploaded of DVX specific stuff.   This particular episode was the first one shot with the DVX, but it broke down on the 3rd day (S-Reel Lock) so we had to shoot 1/3 of the show with the PD-150.  At least we had already captured the "beauty" shots with the DVX!

I was in an outrigger canoe to get these shots.  This is around the time the camera broke down!

I like the highlights coming from the green blow-up doll!   These are the types of shots my producers love me to get.

I wish I had the bouce card for this interview.   The PA had forgotten it in the car at the time.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

I know what you mean John.
It was one of my best "EFP" shoots, but I didn't really get to see the sites with my own eyes - if you know what I mean.
I didn't enjoy the trip until I got home and watched the dailies! I was like "wow - that was going on when I was there?"

I wish all the shoots could all be like that... last week I spent 4 nights outside in freezing cold rain in Vancouver. Payback I guess.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Well, at least you were working with a crew and didn't look like a perv filming well-breasted chics with a vid camera. Darn so the damn thing broke? What is everyone's concensus on the quality of the DVX's tape mechanism. I feel it's not on par with Sony's quality.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

In all fairness to the DVX, I did have it in a high surf (contained in a plastic bag - not an underwater rig) minutes before it broke down.    I'm sure the humidity combined with the saltwater in the air contributed to the source reel lock-up.   Also, it hadn't been serviced at all in its over 200 hours of use.
We had no luck when we tried to rent another DVX in Hawaii.   I even personally visited the Panavision dealer/service centre in Waikiki, and the technician didn't even have the tech manual for the camera - and had never even seen a DVX in person!
Daaammn.. how did the sky come out to be so blue in that shot with the white boat? looks nice. But I think these are in interlaced mode. I guess they would look much nicer if they were in progressive captured
This is a part I do not know about. can someone tell me what I probally did in camera to affect this? I know some of the frames have this look (INTERLACED) and some do not.

What would I have done to do this? :-/

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

It is because you used 24Pnormal (scene file 5 right?)  and just happened to grab a freeze on one of the 2 pulldown frames.   Basically, we are seeing half of one frame, and half of the next frame.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Ah ha. You are right. So, when viewing it normal, it is cool, right?

But when grabbing a frame, I must be careful to grab a good one (for lack of better term)

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Thanks for the late night DVX lesson. NOw, I must crash out. I've been reading through CNN's War on Iraq section on the web.

Makes me tired.

Threat Level is [glow=orange,2,300]Orange.[/glow]
