More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

So this dude ask's me for a smoke and I'm thinking to myself "If you hadn't spent all of your money on your clothes, you could afford you own smokes"

The hangars across the bay are North Island, home of the Pacific Fleet.

If I'd only had a little light source to splash on these damn seagulls.

Something about these colors that just makes me smile.

This really never came together.  Just to damn HOT.

Almost, but still off.

Sometimes, it all comes together.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Great stuff John... you recall your settings on the last money shot? Love the lightburst on the cabin light... you planned that, right? ;)

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

I cannot for the life of me remember. I think it was

Shutter: 1/48
SCENE FILE 5
COLOR TEMP -1

WB off the white fence that you see in frame!

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Daaammn.. how did the sky come out to be so blue in that shot with the white boat? looks nice. But I think these are in interlaced mode. I guess they would look much nicer if they were in progressive captured

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

The first grab is WB of the white rail that is in foreground in the shadow.

The second grab (blue sky white boat) is WB using the last little piece of remaining sunlight from where I was at.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

WB off the boat lights (I think halogens?). I like the colors in that one.

I see what you mean about INTER and PROG. :(

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

;D hey are you sure you didnt just use a digital still camera and photoshop this!! just kiddin, the pictures look really good. One slight coment though the segull one seems to have a tiny bit of noise on the dark shadows is this due to the low light capacity of the dvx or other reasons can this be avoided any good tips for low light cond?
anyway colours look wicked!!

my fav is the second from last pic, the water looks so swoothing, arr.. nice.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

once again.. I cant believe that your not using a polarizer for those skies.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

LOL

There is some noise in the bird grab.  It was extremely low light and I cheated this fact big time with the shutter and iris.  If you could have seen how dark it really was, I don't think there would be any conversation with the 'low light capability' myth spread by the Communist Canon Party.

The interiors are not coming along at all, are they? :(  I did shoot some interiors within the aerospace museum and the Muni Basketball gym (This gym is world famous as Bill Walton and other NBA greats used to ball here.)  In fact, the day we were in the gym, the Las Vegas Stars (I think that's the name) were inside ballin.  Kobe Bryants dad is the coach of the team and he was there and they had one of their goons come over and say "No filming, no filming... that's Kobe's dad (jelly bean bryant) and he dont wanna be filmed."

I was like "For starters, I didnt recognize him and even if i did i wouldnt be trying to film him".  I did get some interior grabs of the gym with hanging halogens, but it turned out so so.   I'd like to aquire a light kit for interior shots.

Jarred, I am fixated on skies now.  Whenever I watch anything on tv (movies, video, whatever) I look at the sky all blown out and think "****....... my skies are better than that overexposed crap!" :)

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Hey,
Some nice shots,

I really like the second to the last one, I definatly think it came together better than the last one, the colors just seem to blend together real well.

And i have to agree with Anhar_Miah, the water does look very soothing.

Nice shots.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

That's some great stuff John.  I've always been blown away by how much better the DVX handles the sky than a camera like the PD150.   I always use a polarizer when I can to bring out the vivid blues.   I also sometimes use graduated ND filters (or "Grey" as Cokin refers to them) to tone down the sky's exposure and then open up a little for FG exposure.   Cokin also has some nice orange and blue grad filters (P-Series) that I like to experiment with.

Here's some samples...

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

Yeah.  Cokin P197 is the orange grad.  Cokin P121 is the ND grad I use.   You can really control the sky if you use them together.

My kit also has:

P160 Linear Polarizer
P694 Sunsoft
P123 Blue Grad (use on overcast days to get blue)
P830 Diffuser 1
P840 Diffuser 2

The great thing about the Cokin system is that all you need is a 72mm ring, the P-mount, and some filters.   They aren't of the same quality as glass filters (and scratch easily), but they are lightweight and cheap.

Obviously I can't answer for what John did, but the secret to blue skies is: put the sun at your back. If you're shooting into the sun you'll get pasty white skies. If you shoot away from the sun you'll get deep rich saturated blues.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

yes barry.. but that sky is blue.. hardcore blue.

Re: More frame grabs to spread the propaganda.

WOW!, really great shots here!

One question though the third shot (the hotel one) can this be avoided with the a panamorphic lens?or was that intentional? the picture seems a little distorted (barrel distortion??) and the pic of the blonde woman lovely shallow DOF!

Any way great work man 8)

...so much too learn..
