More footage

Lucky Duck
More sunrise shots using a variation of VIVIDRGB. The colors are really cranked to an almost fantastical level in some of these shots. I wanted them exaggerated and otherwordly to convey the magic of the rising sun.

Used a graduated ND.6 filter on nearly all the shots.

No color correction, just a small levels adjustment for consistency:

Beautiful Steve. Really quite beautiful. Love the shots . . . the colors . . . the action . . . the mood . . . the music. All of a piece.
Congratulations, my brother. Nice work.

Beautiful images!

Not sure if you've noticed or not, but whenever you have titles over the image, your contrast takes a big hit, then comes back as soon as the titles disappear.

Yeah, I'm aware of that title thing. I'm using an older version of Cineform on another computer and that was a glitch which I believe has since been fixed.

Thanks for the comments.

I fixed that problem and re-uploaded, fyi

Beautiful footage. However, I'm getting weird magenta blurs when I test VIVIDRGB on my A1. They don't show up on the LCD when I'm recording, but when I play the footage back...

Jim, try the following instead:

BG Matrix 25

I realized there was a lot of magenta in the preset when I actually shot on a sunny day (which are rare lately). The settings above are what I used for this particular piece. I am still playing with the settings to develop the "official" VIVIDRGB

This particular one has a green bias but you can let me know what you think through your own tests. Feel free to tweak as you would like and report back.

I look at your work and I can't help wondering if you ever studied still photography or painting...You have a powerful sense of composition, my friend. Congratulations.

disjecta-
do you hook the camera up to a monitor while experimenting so as to actually be able to see what changes you're making? If so, which one? Thanx.

No, I'm creating this stuff by the seat of my pants :)

Actually, I shoot some footage and make a note of the changes I am making and then look at it later on various monitors, including an LCD and a plasma and my JVC studio monitor.

It's been pretty difficult recently because we've had so many overcast days and the vibrancy I want to test is just not there with dull light.

Rafa, thank you for the high compliment. I appreciate it.

I spent a couple of years studying art when I lived in New York City. I went to the Met and MOMA every week and just studied one painting for hours.

I am constantly looking at photographs and deconstructing them. I can't even drive anywhere without looking out the window and framing something... :)

I doublechecked and I did use the second version of your preset when I got the magenta "hotspots"-- they should have been orange like the rest of the picture and this was not evident on the LCD while filming.

Weird, I'm not getting a magenta cast on the second version. Try making your own adjustments and let me know what you come up with.

Disjecta, your work really is beautiful.

Would you mind sharing some of your secrets?

1) Do you use a 35mm adapter with the A1?

2) What kind of filters and holder/Mattebox do you use? Are they regular high quality filters or HD specific?

3) Do you take a external display (Marshall?) with you into the field?

4) do you carry lights or reflectors to light foreground objects?

5) Do you shoot in 24F or 30F?

There is always information in regards to working in a studio, but it is difficult to find tips on shooting in the middle of nowhere. Are there other tips and advice you might offer? Such as gear or practices.

Once again, thank you, beautiful work,

Jay

Thanks Jay...

1. I own a Letus Enhanced Flip but have not used it for my nature work. In fact, I haven't really had a chance to use it in any context other than testing. I plan on using it for some narrative work. I'm really pleased with the Letus although it does need a lot of light.

2. I'm not big on filters in general. The only ones I use on a regular basis are NDs. I have a .6 ND 4x4 and, my favorite of all, a .6 Graduated ND filter. Couldn't do without them. Although I have a CaVision bellows matte box, I generally just take the lazy way out and unscrew the Canon hood and basically hold the filter in front of the lens. If I'm going to be shooting in the same place for an extended period of time, I'll use the matte box. I do a lot of shooting at sunrise so time is of the essence before the magic is gone. I don't want to fiddle with elaborate set up stuff.

3. No, I generally only use the external monitor for working with the adapter. I find the LCD adequate for pulling accurate focus. (I've got about a 95% success rate).

4. I don't generally carry lights or reflectors because I don't want to weigh myself down. Again, if I was going to be shooting in one area and I was very deliberate in what I was shooting, particularly on a sunny day, I would definitely bring a reflector for some bounce light.

5. I am a 24 fps junky so I do not shoot anything but 24f unless it's for event stuff, then I shoot 30f

I think that covers everything...

Thank you Disjecta,

It is the ND's that I have been unable to decide on which to get. I have been leaning towards Sing-Ray grads. It is good to know the 4x4's will be large enough and .6's work well with the internal ND's outside. I will pick up the Cokin P-holder.

Thanks again,
Jay

beautiful stuff Disjecta --

could you describe how you encoded for the upload -- the bit rate, frame size, etc
