Monitoring with the eos utility and other possible uses

Before I got the camera, I asked in another thread about the possibility of using the eos utility as a way of monitoring the video output of the camera. I've since received the camera and tried it, it works nicely. It's certainly not an HD image, but it was bigger and clear enough that I was able to focus better from the computer screen than I could on the LCD.

Another nice feature of the eos utility was that I could focus manually using the software, which gave me an idea - If it is possible figure out what signals are being sent to the camera through the USB port to allow focusing, a simple electronic follow focus could be built. It can be done currently with the utility, but it would be nice if it were built with the idea of adding focus marks - something like cue points that you could go to with the press of a button. (maybe an Iphone app?) Seems possible...

Also, I'm thinking of getting some type of netbook to attach to my indierails dslrsm rig. Before I purchase one though, I'd like to know if a netbook is powerful enough to run the utility.

Thanks
Joe
