Monitoring HD

Maybe this is answered elsewhere...

Will we be able to monitor HD signals on a SD NTSC monitor linked to the camera? Will it downconvert in realtime? Using what kind of connection?

I think this is where the component out feature comes in useful. So theoretically it should work, when connected to a SD NTSC monitor or even a HD monitor with component inputs. Lets hope.

It will likely do an SD on-the-fly downconvert... the JVC HD1 did it, and so do the Sony HDV cameras, so it seems reasonable to expect. But it's of quite limited value, because the HD frame is 4x or 6x as many pixels, so monitoring in SD is really only a vague guess as to what the *real* image looks like.

Yeah, but for some of us framing is the crucial part...

If you are using FF, then no need for monitor there.. where else do you need full rez? Personally i'd trust the picture would be great, don't need continueous Quality Control.

Don't get me wrong, HD monitoring has it's place, but sometimes isn't feasable..

One such example: Steadicam. The lighter rigs that would work best with this camera don't have built in HD monitoring... And for Steadicam work, it's the frameing that the operator cares about.

... which makes the onboard underscan awfully useful! :)

Yes, SD monitoring for framing should be possible, but until Panasonic confirms it, I wouldn't say it's definite.

Barry, yes I too was freaked when I heard about the underscan. I think the Z1 has it, but I'm excited to know that it's becoming more standard, cause I've longed for that for a looooong time.

duh... unless you have a 16:9 switch, which mine does. One can be so stupid sometimes...

ccroo,

right. no square peg in a round hole.

you could also use a transvideo arc-aspect ratio converter.

it's an inline device that converts 1:78 or 2:35 to fit correctly in a 4:3 monitor
through clever use of a widescreen matte--looks like a dvd.
