Monitor?

I was wondering if it is a necessity to use an external HD monitor? What I really mean is does it have to be HD? I know the quality won't look as good I'm guessing however, HD monitors are obviously a lot more expensive. If SD is fine (just 16x9), wheres a good place to get a reasonably priced monitor? I'm sort of strapped for cash and would like to eventually get a monitor and I'd like to investigate my options now.

I think you'd be better of waiting to get an HD one for focusing options, better detail and color represenation. The Manhattan LCD is a really good price and you can recover the cost pretty quickly. I charged one client to bring it out and it was paid off the first week. The people at smallHD also have a decent one that just popped up. I'd stay away from the Ikan and the Marshall is way too overpriced.

SD is a lot smaller than HD; the amount of detail you lose would make the important points of having a monitor fairly useless unless you're using it so someone else can see the framing.

I have a Marshall HD-SDI monitor and I swear by it's clarity and color reproduction, there is a great peace of mind in coming back to Post and it looks exactly like it did on the set! How much is that worth? Now if u go HD component it is quite cheaper but HDMI is okay as well.Ebay has Marshalls on there quite alot, but a monitor is one of the most important pieces of gear u will get.
So take your time and research and then shoot and feel confident with what u see!
Cheers

My only issue is idk if I'll recover cost ever or anytime soon, that's why I'm not going too crazy. There's no jobs on the horizon, just indie projects, just trying to build up my own gear (plus I'm getting a non flip 35mm adapter) but thanks for the advice, I just wanted to make sure hd was worth it

I found these online, looking for monitors less then $200.

From what I've seen, using a cheap LCD monitor wont give you perfect color reproduction and usually has more noise on dark colors... But its HD and has great detail and high resolution.

Does anyone else use a PC or HDTV monitor?

Are you looking to get a field monitor or a studio monitor? I assumed a field monitor.. as that's why I suggested the Marshall.

If you are going for a studio monitor then you could very well get one of those matrox reference conversion modules.. forgot the name... and then you could use any HDMI or DVI monitor and get a true reference.

That's just about as good as going the expensive root and all of that. I personally know the value of getting good acurate calibrated monitors but there's so many more things to spend ya money on. If you can get 90 percent of what a 3k monitor gives you for a combined purchase price of like 700 bucks you are golden.

cheers.

Wow, that monitor by smallHD looks pretty neat. I'm eager to see some review on it when it comes out.
