Monitor solution for the 5D/7D/T2i?

My personal feeling is, trying not to be so short sighted on all my purchases that every time I increase my equipment 'quality' I have to replace every aspect of my kit.

I TOTALLY understood money issues and understand where you are coming from. I waited almost 8 months before purchasing a monitor. I ended up with the smallHD because the RED monitor of the same size was so much more (and not available) I felt I can use the smallHD with my RED Scarlet when I get it and also the one that comes with it for touch screen focusing.

I too had thought about a cheaper low rez LCD but the picture quality is so inferior (as the LCD on the canon is actually pretty nice!) that it seemed like a waste. All it did was allow different articulations of using the camera (like on a jib) but lets face it, trying to manipulate the 7D on a crane is a PAIN IN THE NECK (no remote control) so the visuals were not my only issue.

The smallHD does not sell DP1a anymore, they are the DP1X, and I am not sure if they have updated the voltage regulation issue, I will have to ask them. Eventually I will run them off my RED battery and just invest in a lot more RED batteries.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I never really use these monitor for color accuracy but more for focus. I hate squinting so anything bigger than a 3 inch view works for me.

Chucks the Lilliput sounds more up my alley. Since you have experience with it and its pretty affordable, I may purchase one of those. I only need to use it for focusing. I've been pretty 90% successful fousing without one so this would make things a lot better for me. Thanks everyone for your input. If I had the money, I wouldn't mind the Small HD.

It might seem a low-tech solution but using a sock-loupe (just about $90 I think) on the native screen will give you a much better picture to focus and compose with than a monitor (which just like the camera LCD is useless in bright light. There is a sock-loupe model for every DSLR and most point & shoot cameras too.
