no, your GPU has nothing to do with it.... for proper NTSC preview, you need a CRT broadcast monitor that has blue-gun only mode.

can you recommed an ok one for under 1 k if there is any just to point me in the right direction

thanks

Just buy a cheap TV until you can get a really nice monitor.

You don't have to have blue only to calibrate your monitor. It makes it easier, but it isn't a must.

Set your brightness and contrast like you normally would then go down to your local video or photo store and get a Pure blue gel. Some say a Rosco #80 or a #64.

You know you can just cover one eye with a small square of gel right? No need to cover the entire monitor.

Thats what I was refering to. Sorry that I didn't make it clear.

I don't know if covering the entire monitor would work or not.

You want to get enough gel to be able to double or triple it though just in case one layer of it isn't enough.

Right I was replying to Markfy's comment about "getting enough gel on there being a pain" Shouldnt take more than a couple of minutes to calibrate a monitor.

Kodak Wratten 47B is the smpte spec and should be good in one layer. I've got one in a small plastic frame that does the trick perfectly. Gel isnt much more than 1" x 1".

let me ask you this. i have a program called mediashout that i use for displaying songs for church etc. it has those smpte color bars as one of the options to display. if i connected a tv to my laptop, that would be a second monitor, i dont know if xp will recognize it, but, if i have those color bars i guess i can get a semi good calibration. correct. thanks for the input. between 2 and 3 k best calibration or decent one. again, its not prof work but better than my laptop. i do like bigbossbmb link.

Jeff, Thank you, thankyou,ThankYOu, Thank You!

Scotman, there is a device that you can mount on your display monitor to calibrate the color but I think the results are not like the real thing. Don't remember what it is called. Do a search on "production monitor". There was a lot of discussion about a year ago with a lot of great info on it. From what I have learned so far, having a blue gun is important as is the type of phosphor coating. SMPTE C is ideal for color accuracy, although you might not want to pay for that feature. P22 phosphors are more affordable. Keep an eye on the Marketplace as there are occasionally some good deals. That JVC mentioned above seems to be decent bang for the buck.

Covering one eye sounds hard too! Plus that gel is a beeatch to find. Even in Toronto. I ended up just using CTB, which is easy to find. Maybe that's why I had to use three layers. I think the JVC is a still at $465.
