Moiré galore!

Ok folks, so this little clip is related to anti-aliasing problems on the Canon 5D Mark II.

http://www.vimeo.com/7590690

Look at the front of her blouse and the rainbow effect. Matches nicely with her skirt, but actually is merely black with silver flecks. Can't throw the problem pattern out of focus, because the fashion and the model ARE the subject. Any post solutions or plug-ins for Final Cut Studio 2.0 to deal with this? (aside from frame by frame masking, please). Haven't tried the Caprock filters yet, but waiting on receipt of it...

ps> the scan flicker is not something in the original (shot at 1/50th sec in Paris), it appeared after Vimeo transcoded it.

Great before shot for Caprock, can't wait for the after

I would download it and show you how to remove the blouse moiré . . . . . but 401.46MB - getting on for half a gigabyte for a 2 second clip !!!!!!!!!

:O

Hi Lee,
It wasn't a 2 second clip originally, that too seems to be a gift from Vimeo, actually it was much longer. They did however keep it's large file size. I figured since it was already up just to leave it as it makes it point.
I would be very curious as to your techniques or recommendations. Is there another way to check that out with you?

edit: I am replacing it with a lighter file (96mb), which will hopefully keep it's parameters during the transcoding by Vimeo...

Definitely a situation where the Caprock would kill that rainbow. Just curious, what lens were you using?

It was a Canon 35mm f1.4 L series lens. But with the Caprock filter I would go with my Contax Zeiss 35mm f1.4 lens instead because of the 67mm thread. I have found both lenses surprisingly close in terms of sharpness.

-Replacement video clip up by the way (only 96mb). The rainbows really show around 13-20sec.

Try this:
Copy and paste the text below into a plain text editor

Code:
scriptid "Moire Buster" //DO NOT LOCALIZE
filter "Moire Buster";
group "5D Fixes";

// Blurs the V channel in YUV to soften moire

InformationFlag("YUVaware")
input blur_amount, "Blur", Slider, 30, 0, 60

code

float colorSpace;
colorSpace = kFormatYUV219;

BlurChannel(src1, dest, 0/renderres, 1, 0, 0, 0, aspectof(dest));
BlurChannel(src1, dest, 0/renderres, 0, 1, 0, 0, aspectof(dest));
BlurChannel(src1, dest, 0/renderres, 0, 0, 1, 0, aspectof(dest));
BlurChannel(src1, dest, blur_amount/renderres, 0, 0, 0, 1, aspectof(dest));

Save the text file as Moire Buster.txt in
/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins
Restart Final Cut Pro and look for the filter in the "5D Fixes" folder under the Video Filters menu.

Wow, fantawstic Martin. I will give this a try. Thank you very much!

ps> do you know of anything like this for other forms of aliasing, aka "the moving ants" around certain fine metallic or repeating patterns?

Sorry no.

The filter above works reasonable well with your clip. The ugly color moire dissappears. If you really, really have to use that shot and if you don't mind the desaturation and greenish color cast its usable I think. It's quite brute and I think that's what Lee has in mind too.

Actually, something a little strange, the script shows in the canvas that it is working, but after i render it, it returns to it's original form with all the moire...

I noticed the same thing and I think it's the h.264 format. If you export the clip to a ProRes QuickTime file the filter will be applied though.

Or you convert the 5D clips and work with ProRes 422 in FCP which is the recommended workflow anyway.

It works for me. Convert the clip to ProRes, place it into the timeline, double click it to load it into the viewer, apply the filter, then render it .

Not sure what I did the first time. But it works the second time for me. I can still see some moiré patterns and some "marching ants" underneath, but there are no longer rainbow-like colors and the patterns are very much diminished. I used 30 as a value, so it could still be tweaked some more, but it is a very sufficient workaround. Thank you once again.

I'm glad it worked for you. Yes there are still marching ants. This dress and the 5D just don't work. Maybe a Caprock 2.0 filter will help. As far as I know you've ordered one. Please let us know if it suppresses the moire of this particular dress.

Would love to retest the dress, but fashion doesn't work that way. You often get it for one day and one day only. I guess I will try to replace it with something else - the magical metallic spaghetti strainer test for example. We'll see - Caprock on the way.
