The clouds:
There are 4 cloud shots but I think you mean the sideshot.
Anyways here's the 4.
1/ The intro began as static pyroclusters but if you look closely they are moving.
It's hard to see with that resolution but I used Morphman
to give them a bit of movement.
2/ The side shot was a bit of a pain. I was going for what I call
the John Wayne shot. A side view with alot of cloud movement.
I rendered out a cloud pass first consisting of the camera moving sideways over a few big static pyroclusters.
Then brought that footage into the background and added the spitfire and pilot and rendered out again.
Then made that the background. I took the cloud-pass footage and put it
on a plane in the foreground, with some aplha transparency, between the spit and another camera.
Then moved the camera in for a CU. In order to fake some depth I passed
through the plane so that it would no longer render the clouds at the CU.
To fill the gap I added another pyrocluster literally inches in front
of the lens for a bit of cloud. As the camera pulled back I animated the
visibility of the CU pyrocluster so as not to look like little puffs.
I also did the same animating when the cam was zooming in.
3/. The cloud bursts were of course single pyrocluster puffs.
Those were just plain ugly.
4/ The same cloud footage was used for the clouds below the wing at the
beginning of the third shot.
Clouds take forever to render so I used a bit of the 2.5D gaming tricks.
The ground:
I started with a small ariel shot of western Germany.
I used a paint program to clone out the obvious landmarks. Then using
a larger canvas I cloned and recloned until I got a 8096 x 8096 texture.
I still had minor problems with seams and had to adjust the x & y texture
offsets for each of the two shots so the seams were not visible.
It is such a large land mass.
The sky was a still shot from my back door.

Of other interest, I'm currently watching 'Dogfights' on the History
Channel which is on all of this week at 8PM EST.(Ontario anyways)
This is not my stuff. It's better. Here's a bit of it on youtube...

so it's giving me ideas now that I have no deadlines. I'm thinking about doing a dogfight...
