Modelling a spitfire, I hope.

The clouds:
There are 4 cloud shots but I think you mean the sideshot.
Anyways here's the 4.

1/ The intro began as static pyroclusters but if you look closely they are moving.
It's hard to see with that resolution but I used Morphman
to give them a bit of movement.

2/ The side shot was a bit of a pain. I was going for what I call
the John Wayne shot. A side view with alot of cloud movement.
I rendered out a cloud pass first consisting of the camera moving sideways over a few big static pyroclusters.
Then brought that footage into the background and added the spitfire and pilot and rendered out again.

Then made that the background. I took the cloud-pass footage and put it
on a plane in the foreground, with some aplha transparency, between the spit and another camera.

Then moved the camera in for a CU. In order to fake some depth I passed
through the plane so that it would no longer render the clouds at the CU.

To fill the gap I added another pyrocluster literally inches in front
of the lens for a bit of cloud. As the camera pulled back I animated the
visibility of the CU pyrocluster so as not to look like little puffs.
I also did the same animating when the cam was zooming in.

3/. The cloud bursts were of course single pyrocluster puffs.
Those were just plain ugly.

4/ The same cloud footage was used for the clouds below the wing at the
beginning of the third shot.

Clouds take forever to render so I used a bit of the 2.5D gaming tricks.

The ground:
I started with a small ariel shot of western Germany.
I used a paint program to clone out the obvious landmarks. Then using
a larger canvas I cloned and recloned until I got a 8096 x 8096 texture.
I still had minor problems with seams and had to adjust the x & y texture
offsets for each of the two shots so the seams were not visible.
It is such a large land mass.

The sky was a still shot from my back door.

Of other interest, I'm currently watching 'Dogfights' on the History
Channel which is on all of this week at 8PM EST.(Ontario anyways)
This is not my stuff. It's better. Here's a bit of it on youtube...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt8G3vxLmKE&mode=related&search=
so it's giving me ideas now that I have no deadlines. I'm thinking about doing a dogfight...

I didn't really want to bump an old thread but I had to put this picture in here.

It's from yesterdays paper. It has nothing to do with me, bro or hoffnung but it does take place at the museum we took the spit pics and I think it's pretty cool. And while our story was fiction, this one is not. (you can also see the spit in the background.)

Looking good Raptor!

I have just started my project, will be using RHINO. I already need some help!
I've also got the Wylam drawings. Bu I'm stumped as how to convert from inches to decimal. Can anyone please help?

the units does not matter, just as long as the blueprints are all to the same scale, but having some dimesions can help to during the rough blocking out stage.

Also for aircrafts take a look at spline modelling or NURBS if that is supported by your app.

Although almost any kind of modellng methods can be used, I think in my view Spline/NURBS are great for smooth hardbody stuff.

Funny you guys bring this up. When I modeled this I just had C4D for about a week I think, so I jumped in the fire and ofcourse did everything wrong.
I had a deadline so managed to get it done. Not happy with it and since had some C4D experience I've since remodelled it and work on it here and there.

I'm taking more care on everything this time also.
I strongly recommend box modeling. And pay attention to where the seams go.

3DKiwi has a start-to-finish 18hr? tutorial covering everything you need to know about modeling & texturing with BP, a spit at C4Dcafe.com for around 60$ US. His tutes are a+ and offers alot of free ones also.

I thought this was a dead thread, but I've been planning a new fight. Learned a lot in the last year. I still have to complete an ME though for the big clash.

Post anytime about the spit.

mmm, hold on, inches to decimal? Like 27 & 1/4 inch = ? decimal?
Is that what you mean?

You should have a calculator handy. Period.

MMM, I Know, but:

I'm also using the Wylam drawings, but I want reconstruct the curves using his dimensions, not trace. My question is: On the fuse sections: does 1-11/2 mean 1 foot, one and a half inches? If it does, I found a decimal convertor on the web. However, when I decimalized all the lengths for section C-C, it came out too long.

I'm a metric lad, but I take it that one gas decimalize for all programs?

I'd say 1-1 1/2 = 1' 1.5", thats correct. I didn't use the dimensions so they could be off.

//updated.

I did manage to read the numbers. Here's what I got (fusilage cross section cuts):

Nose to A: 1' 9.5" (21.5")
A-B: 12" (12")
B-C:3' 1" (37")
C-D:2' 3" (27")
D-E: 2' 10" (34")
E-F:3' 4" (40")
F-G:2' 9.5" (33.5")
G-H:2' 7" (31")
H-I:2' 7" (31")
I-J: 2' 7" (31")
so far = 298
376.5 - 298 = 78.5.
J-K:1' 3" (15")
***J-K-L:4' 5.5" (53.5")****
dont add this value. instead derive K-L = 53.5" - (J-K) 15" = 38.5"
L-End of tail: 2' 1.5" (25.5")
Total: 377"Listed as EF 31' 4.5" (376.5")
So I'm over by 1/2 "
I'll check again.

The dimensions at the top of the tail describing K-end of 2' 4.5" + 2' 11" are right and so is J-K.
So the JKL dimension of 4' 5.5" or L-end of 2' 1.5" is wrong and is over by 0.5"
Assuming L-end is correct since it is given and KL is derived then KL is probably wrong. I'd make it 3' 2" (38").
--------
So the new values are:
Nose to A: 1' 9.5" (21.5")
A-B: 12" (12")
B-C:3' 1" (37")
C-D:2' 3" (27")
D-E: 2' 10" (34")
E-F:3' 4" (40")
F-G:2' 9.5" (33.5")
G-H:2' 7" (31")
H-I:2' 7" (31")
I-J: 2' 7" (31")
J-K: 1' 3" (15")
K-L:3' 2" (38")
L-end: 2' 1.5" (25.5")
---------
total = 376.5"

Currently working on my spitfire version 20+xx (WIP). A few changes to make yet.
This is one hard model to get right. I'll get it right one of these days.
(Think I got that wing fairing a little better this time.)

The canopy problem: In the top two pictures:
Left pic: The quarter window panel bottom curves upwards and the front has an armour plate.
The right pic quarter panel curves downwards and the front has no armour. This has in the past caused me untold grief.
(And in the pic I posted previously, it curves upwards and the front has no armour like the MK Vb. A little confusing.)

Dont hold your breath. It may be a couple months. I'm not posting all of the wips this time. If I get something I'm happy with I'll post it unless I get hammered and then I'll post it anyways. I also have other projects on the go, all in bits & pieces.

Its a new year though & I've learned alot more about body paint and UV wrapping and I'll be using photoshop with layered textures this time so it's a big long process. I'm also hoping to do a battered up version and not so true in the historical sense as I want to use this one in my own animations. We'll see.

I'll be gald when I get the damn thing done. This is almost embarassing haha. Aah. Fun though.

Oh, hey, if you do any shoots for dvxfest this summer and need some help
gimme a shout. My usual filmakers aint been a filmin'.

Sweet thanks Raptor. I might enter the timefest. Are you making the spitfire for jun or is it a job?

The spitfire is for fun. It's one of those things that I can't let go. I've seen models posted all over the web and they're not right in some way or another.
Some are pretty close. But, ahhh, it just bugs me. It seems simple enough.
Modelling is easy. Just model it right? Well I've yet to see a perfectly convincing spitfire model. I've seen some good ones. Nothing like the real deal though.
Probably take me 100 tries :).

Timefest: Feel free to run the script by me too. I'm not a writer but I can spot some deadends here and there at least.

//IT'D BE NICE if I could get the actual damn blueprints. But ofcourse everyone wants mooolah for that.
And then the prints are crap.

I'll trade something for the prints if anyones intrested. PM me.

That is what I thought it sounded like a obession or for fun project :). I'm no writter either by any means yet but I will send when I finish it for sure.
thanks raptor! By the way Voodoo seems prettypowerful!

For straight up capturing, no fancy stuff, the free Voodoo goes toe-to-toe with the 10K$ boujou. At some point Voodoo will be bought out I suspect.
