Mock iPhone commercial, need some feedback!

Hey everyone,

I just did a mock iPhone commercial today with the Canon XL-2. I haven't filmed anything in awhile so I decided to do a comedic skit today with an actor friend of mine. It was shot on the Canon XL-2, edited in Final Cut Pro with some minor Photoshopping. Also used the 3-way color corrector to try and fix some of the hotter shots that were caused to the whole "point-and-shoot" element.

in any case, tell me what you think!

Hi Deveh,

It looks nice. Acting is also quite good. One shot looked as if your Auto Gain was on. I did not evaluate the audio (watched on the MacBook).

I would say that your basic filmmaking skill is good enough to benefit from a little image enhancement. I suggest that you either enhance the picture a little in post or experiment with Presets (have a look at my suggestion here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1254479&postcount=16). Of coarse you would ideally want to shoot this with the talent in the shade or bring your exposure down so your talent don't blowout on the face (because of direct sun).

But in general very nice - well done.

I agree, acting is great, especially on the guy on the right. Image doesn't seem that good, but it could have just been the compression on Youtube that did that. Pretty good job overall though.

Watching this without sound on my iPod Touch it lacks visual appeal or clear action, so that's something to consider as a refinement. Also, how about at least one shot of the iPhone screen?

What encoding settings did you use to upload to YouTube? Quality looks pretty good compared to many YouTube clips.

Hahaha. You may want to watch it with sound. It'll explain the reason the iPhone screen isn't seen.

Oh-oh! Copyright, Trademark, Libel Issues

Hi Devesh,

Ditto others - nice acting and music mix, although the talent's sound was marginal at best (mic too far away, proximity effect problem and music also overrode talent's voices).

Based on the slow download the video file size was big enough, yet the video quality wasn't very sharp. For a locked down camera, little action and simple background, the video shouldn't be quite so soft (even on YouTube). I'm guessing this was attributable to your compressor settings and not your camera presets, since the Vimeo version on your website looked fine.

Yes, the midday lighting was a real problem - seems like your zebra's would have been warning you if set at 90 percent. If you're forced to film outside midday, consider getting some diffusion and a bounce board for fill.

Aside from the humorous parody, be aware this video could get you in some serious legal trouble with at&t and Apple. Using ther company name, logo, and trademark could easily lead to a handful of lawsuits from the both of them, including libel suit (regardless of your Apple disclaimer). IMHO, I recommend you ***IMMEDIATELY*** remove the video from all social websites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc) and your website, and pray you won't be discovered by the guys in the suits.

Thanks for sharing, Michael
