ML Newb -- Shutter Speeds / ISO

I realize this may be a dumb question -- but why are certain values {such as 1/63 shutter/160 ISO} highlighted green in ML? Canon T2i.

Because they are native values in the camera. You see when you shoot at 24 frames a second you want to double your frame rate to get your shutter speed (the 180 degree rule) and with magic lantern you can actually do that by setting it to 1/48th for the shutter speed. Also the camera's native ISO values are anything that can be divided by 160, so 160, 320, 480, and so on. I believe that is how it works at least

I think all ML is doing is showing the real shutter speeds, instead of the rounded numbers that Canon uses. That is: I think Canon's 1/50 and ML's 1/48 are exactly the same, and they both keep the shutter open for 1/48 s. Not from personal testing (I just wouldn't be able to discern), but from a comment by a1ex I think I read somewhere. May be wrong, though (and it wouldn't make a big difference anyway).

That NEVER was a RULE! 1/48th of a second was WHAT YOU GOT from a mechanical rotating disk shutter with a 180 degree cutout at 24 fps.

Later variable angle shutters let operators get higher shutter speeds by "egding into" that 180 cutout. A 90 degree angle opening would result in a 1/96th of a second shutter speed and so forth. Very little of this really applies in today's cameras which scan the sensor electronically.

So we can use 1/50th and there is no discernable difference from 1/48, motion blur is pretty much identical. Or we can use 1/60th and the motion blur effect is still similar. Close enough anyway.

If artificial lighting is going to be used or appear in the scene, 1/50th (or some multiple) will be best in areas where power line frequency is 50Hz, 1/60th (or multiple) preferred where line frequency is 60Hz (like in US)
