C300: MkIII Review, any questions?

Hey guys,

One of my side-jobs is writing for ProVideo Coalition, and Canon has just lent me a C300mkIII to review for a week or so. I also personally own a C500mkII, so I'll be making comparisons between the two, but are there any things you'd like to see addressed in the article? There will be a video component as well, so it won't just be stills and a write-up.

Obviouslly the 4K slowmo and low-light performance are on the block, but I'd love to know if there's anything else I can add to the list of tests/analysis that would prove valuable to folks.

Let me know!

AF testing. Different modes, touchscreen tracking, face-tracking and how switching faces works, performance with 120fps. Thank you.

The big thing that a lot of people would love to see (and keep asking about on the FB groups), is a proper over/underexposure test between the two (+7 to -7 stops). Where the cameras are compared at their respective full-sensor widths (not with the C500ii cropped in to S35mm mode - which is how the only comparison tests so far have been done).

You’ll need to match the FoV between the cameras with a zoom or different primes (24mm/35mm or 35mm/50mm).

Also, for the sake of getting a clearer idea of just where each camera begins to clip out in the highlights. It would be great if from +5 to +7 stops of overexposure, you went up in half-stop increments (rather than full-stops).

This would allow us to finally see the respective improvements offered by the larger-format’s smaller noise, versus the smaller sensor’s DGO technology.

Check for FPN, especially in low light. A lot of these new cams have sensor issues out of the box, usually corrected in the first firmware update...

I would love to see a side by side in Rec.709 or EOS Standard with both cameras, preferably outdoors. I am curious if there are any color variations between the two models.

I'm interested in AF stress tests, battery life in general, plus any unusual discoveries/annoying quirks.

I'm sure the c500 ii is already a great indicator but you never know..

Any predictions of the results?

I suspect they’ll come very close to each other (as DGO and the larger sensor both offer advantages to latitude).

But no one has compared the two formats properly to-date, so we really can’t know until someone does.

How is the fan noise and any issues with overheating?

I was shooting yesterday from 8.30am to 6pm. Temperature raised to 33C / 91F in the afternoon.

Fan setting was auto with low on standby and recording both. In the afternoon the fan status in the display went from green to yellow and I changed it to middle in standby. The status went shortly after down to green. It went up when recording for some seconds to yellow but went down again after I stopped recording. I was shooting 81 clips in XF-AVC 410mbs 4K25p. Longest was 4:30min, shortest 0:30sec. Most clips average 2:30min, 400GB in total.

For me in the office the fan seems loud, much louder as on the cameras (FS7 / EVA1) I had before. In the field I didn't barely hear it but sometimes felt the air.

I am very pleased with the results. Everything went flawless. Probably I let the talent too often walk towards camera - but I was so happy how well the AF worked.
