MKH70-P48 accessories

I just purchased the Sennheiser MKH70-P48. I have to say, this thing is great! I never have a professional mic before and this seems heaven to me. Anyway, now I need help to find some accessories. Will someone help me find some alternative to the following Sennheiser parts:

Suspension/pistol grip: MZS 20-1
Basket windshield: MZW 70-1
Windschutzhulle "hairy" cover: MZH 70-1

One more thing, does anyone know if there a case out there that is made to hold the MKH70 mic and all of the above accessories? I'm looking for a case that will allow me to carry everything...maybe a short XLR cable, recorder, or portable field mixer. That will be nice.

These parts are WAY too expensive for me, at this stage. Your help is much appreciated!

Rycote Wind Protection System: Rycote blimp, windjammer, and Lyre suspension system. Right around $700 depending on how long you need the blimp but buy once, cry once.

Okay, since it's close to the price of the Sennheiser brand, what's the difference between the two?

Okay, I found this case. It's exactly what I'm looking for. However, I'm thinking about buying the K-Tek K-152FTS boom pole and it looks like this case it not long enough. Any other suggestion?

Yes, that is the kit. I bought this kit about 6 months ago for a film shoot where we were in a boat in coastal florida in 20mph+ winds and this thing saved the audio on the shoot.

When shopping, I spoke with several people who said, if you can't get it with the rycote, then it can't be gotten. Make sure you order the system to support your longest microphone (in my case, it was a sennheiser ME-80/K3 and I ordered the kit 7, which has a removeable extension tube for when I'm using shorter microphones.

Are you referring to this kit?

I have the Sennheiser windscreen (blimp), pistol grip, and the muffle (it's extra "hairy").

The blimp and muffle are fantastic. I find the Sennheiser blimp more transparent (accoustically) than Rycote's offerings and it perfoms very well in light wind. The caveat with the Sennheiser blimp is that the plastic "frame" is on the inside, below the fabric, which means you need to be much more careful with it than you would a Rycote windscreen. It's probably on the same "take care of it" level as a Cinela which, if you're considering a Sennheiser-priced setup, is a much better choice (although I don't think they make windscreens for mics that large.) Edit: they don't even make a shockmount for the 70. OOPS! Rycote it is... ;)

The Sennheiser pistol grip on the other hand... it leaves quite a bit to be desired. I originally got the setup as a kit with a 416 for less than a 416 was by itself so it was a no brainer. However, the pistol grip has poor vibration suppression, especially compared to the very cost-effective (and easily replaceable) Rycote lyres, which now come standard on almost all their mounts I believe. I use an invision mount indoors and its performance is shocking for the price. The one thing I do like about the pistol grip is how it secures the windscreen basket in place. The two little flaps for tightening down the screen work surprisingly well - but not well enough to make the shortcomings of the pistol grip worth ignoring.

Purchased separately, the Sennheiser setup is simply not worth it (just like, my opinion, man.)

While it doesn't carry the whole kit, for your pole (I have a K-Tek 152CCR - so a bit shorter than the one you're thinking about) I suggest the hardware store. About $30, maybe $40 tops.

I think one of my favourite bits about location sound is the amount of great, eminently useful, DIY stuff to get into.

As for the rest of the windscreen, microphone, grip, etc., etc., I'm not sure what others are using... I use an old Lightware case. It was intended for lights and photo equipment, but it's very light and can hold everything else (mics, cables, trinkets, shoulder harness) except for the RM multi add-on for my mixer bag.

Again, many thanks for the input. So, Petros, you recommend that I purchase the blimp and windscreen from Sennheiser and the rest from Rycote, correct? If I buy separate, they should work together, right?

Okay, for the boom pole, should I go with the K-Tek K-152FTS or KS-153FTS? What are the big differences in this two models?

I don't think the Sennheiser blimp will fit the rycote mount.

I see. Thanks, gpforet! I'll take the Rycote Windshield Kit 6. Please let me know if this kit will not fit the MKH70.

Hiya,

Actually I'm not. I'm sorry I wasn't more clear; the Rycote kits are a better overall purchase. If you can get some kind of great deal on a complete Sennheiser kit, it might be worth it, but the components are ridiculously expensive separately and if the price was nearly the same as the Rycote kit, I'd probably go with the Rycote kit as a better, overall solution.

Update... sorry didn't see page 2. I'm with gpforet.

I do think the blimps are sort of interchangeable but it's so much work to check and try... why bother. Rycote makes wonderful equipment. My opinions about the acoustical transparency of the blimps should be pitted against the fact that Rycote windscreens are a standard, highly regarded (with good reason), excellent product worth every penny.

As for your K-Tek question, Dave Fisk (who recently introduced himself here as he now works for K-Tek) would be a great person to ask.

Here's the thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?235757-Dave-from-K-Tek-here

Thank you so much for the responses. I'm greatly appreciated since this will be my first professional gear purchased. In the paste I have purchased some "cheap" gear because I don't have money....well, as many have found out, I got burned a couple of times. It's such a fuss to use it every time. So now, I'm trying (my best) to get some pro gear.

And yes, I'll check out the K-tek thread. Thanks!

OK - you have a mic. worth almost £2,500 (UK price including VAT).

The best windshield kit for it would be a Rycote Windshield Kit-6 (£392 +VAT in the UK), or, if money is really tight, go for the S-series Kit S-450 (£165.76 +VAT in the UK).

Actually, the Rycote Kit-6 is better than the Sennheiser one and I would not recommend the Sennheiser one now as the Rycote one has a much better suspension system and the supplied ConnBox better isolates the mic. from the cable than the old Sennheiser one.

The mic. itself is , superb, though.

I hope this helps.

The Rycote is actually much better than the old Sennheiser and is actually cheaper as well.

The wind protection is about equal, but the Rycote has a much better suspension system and also properly isolates the cable as well.

I have lots of Sennheiser microphones but use them all now with Rycote mounts and not the Sennheiser ones.

Oh - and, yes, the Kit-6 is definitely the correct one for the MKH 70 - see HERE.

Clever! I like that. I'm currently in the process of getting a real boompole and this is a clever transport solution! Thanks.

This could work for you as well.
I use them for all my poles.
