MJPEG mode sound quality issue

Hi there!

First I want to thank all users and the author of hack-tool for keeping alive
such a good discussion and allowing end-users to open some new horizons
for creativity!

I'm also testing GH1 in Motion JPEG mode, because it is allowing up to 70 mbits
without problems, and the detail quality is impressive! Have tested several
configurations - and I can't achieve such video quality with AVCHD mode.

But, the sound quality in MJPEG mode is worse - 16kHz versus 48kHz in AVCHD,
is it possible to tweak this setting?

Thanks.

If your concerned about quality you shouldnt be bothering with the camera audio. Get a portable recorder like the zoom h2 and hook it to your mike.

Yep, I can do so - but this is another gear to buy - this camera is able to record 48 kHz audio in
AVCHD mode.
So my question was more like - if it is working in AVCHD - why can't it work in MJPEG mode? :)

Because it is different code, very old (first versions used 8KHz sound :-) ).
All this 16KHz stuff seems to be hardcoded in many parts.

Go and buy recorder, I personally reccomend Tascam DR-100 ($300 on ebay).

That is sad :( Maybe it is just me, but I do not require studio quality sound and I am perfectly happy with the 48kHz AVCHD audio. However, the 16KHz MJPEG audio is ****.

Well, btw is there any hope to get also stable ~64 mbit in AVCHD mode?
I've tweaked several settings, tried multiple configurations.. but video quality is
far away from that I'm getting from MJPEG mode with 360, 300, 260, 200 setting.

thanks.

How does this actually work? Do you need to sync the audio afterwards or is there a way to record with the h2/ the tascam directly into the video file in the camera bypassing the cameras own mic?

Unfortunately the downside to this is that you have to sync in post, and these recorders dont do timecode, so you'd have to lipsync manually or with a program like pluraleyes. You can also use a device like a Juiced link which will give you a considerable increase in audio quality while still using camera audio input, though it wont give you a higher sampling rate.

Syncing is very easy. Just clap your hands and line up the wave.
In camera sound is a complete waste of time. You can use the Zoom H2 as a microphone for your camera as well as a flash recorder. Geez, it is so cheap. Several of my mic stands, as well as at least six of my shock mounts each cost more than that.
