7D Mixing 7D and RED footage

I worked on a project shooting with the RED at 2k this weekend. I was tasked with shooting behind-the-scenes video and stills with my 7D. For one scene, I was in a good enough position to get close and shoot the actual scene. The editor showed me their shot and (in my opinion) my was a shot was better in terms of capturing the emotion. Either way, enough people noticed what I was doing and liked what I was doing, that by the end of the shoot, I had ceased shooting behind the scenes video, and instead I was getting shots they didn't have the phyiscal space or time to get.

The editor just informed me that they'll have no trouble mixing my shots in with the RED. The naked eye won't spot the difference between them.

In the future, I would be very very careful doing that. This gig, you were lucky. On a high end professional gig, chances are you would have been fired for shooting the scene without permission. Not to mention blackball your self with certain people. Glad it worked out though, cant wait to see the footage intercut with a red.

I think you read wrong as the op was tasked with getting behind the scenes footage. It was clearly his job to record any and everything that moved.

Good job on that TeresofBlood!

Exactly...the DP might not be thrilled that your shot will be cut into the scene instead of his...but in the end you're making them look good if your cam was in the right space for the scene. Glad to know that the two cameras can intercut decently.

that similar thing happened on a shoot for a toy company commercial. They used a RED, we had a 5d, and the footage that we got was so good that the editors cut it in perfectly. It was all action footage we caught using our "Rat Cam" R/C Camera Car. The DP looked at us like fools the entire time...He thought he was cool since he had a "Skater Dolly", hell, we had a "Rat Cam" lol..

at 00:02 secs, 0:07 secs, and pretty much every moving shot where the R/C toy is viewed from the side profile in motion. The coolest looking shot to me is the shot at 0:02, We just circled around the cars and got a steady continuous shot. This is the short version.

No, not tying to be argumenative, but shooting behind the scene footage is not the same as shooting the scene. Go ahead and try it on a high end feature. Watch how fast you get bounced.

I understand that Maran, and I wouldn't attempt that on a high end project. The project this weekend was a crew of colleagues who trust my eye and my level of commitment. They gave me carte blanche and my efforts were appreciated.

Err, shooting bits of certain scenes is exactly what you need for behind the scenes stuff, because a lot of the time you won't ever get a copy of the final thing you're shooting BTS for. I've had the exact same thing happen to me countless times on BTS shoots, director has seen the angle I have on it and asked for all my rushes immediately afterwards to cut into the vid. So long as you're not getting in the way of the main crew, are polite and chat to the AD making them aware of what you're doing and know that if you get in the way, you're gonna get shouted at, there will never be a problem. I've had DOP's on huge commercial shoots come up to me and ask me tonnes of questions about my 7D, the pros and cons and where their application is worthwhile. RED and 5/7D mix very well, we use that combo fairly regularly.

maranfilms i was shooting behind the scenes when they were filming in front of my house big war scene with tanks with cam on crane.. expensive scenes but nobody said anything ,i think what your wrote it just hilarious ,a bit rude and dont fit into this situation at all.
It depends on person ,if someone would want to get rid of second cameras on the set then they will ,no matter if there is such rule or not.
If they let him shoot and then used his shots, wheres the problem ? In the end he helped and you want to whip him ?

I certainly wasn't trying to be rude to the op. But if it was taken that way I apologize. Not my intent. And if you got a laugh out of what I wrote, (BWWD) well then at least I put a smile on your face. :) Im just saying from what I have seen on high end features, I've been on a good amount. (my sons an actor, and works with the some of the best in the industry) I get what the OP was asked to do, and it worked out well for him, for which im glad. In the future I will not bother trying to give useful advice. Seemed to backfire. sorry OP.

I know what you mean maranfilms. In all credit to you, I was filming a well budgeted film at Berlin station (in germany for the berlinale film fest.), and I wasn't getting in anyones way. I was behind all the crew, but got told to, 'No film!' haha. I guess they could tell I was English a mile off...

You may give away vital sections of the story or characters etc. It's less relevant in the op's situation, but it's in the same vein as dvxusers fiction fest. Where in all the bts stuff couldn't have any footage of the film being shot or give away any plot points.

All in all, don't hate on him :)

I hold nothing against Maranfilms. I realize he was just looking out, and as I said before in some situations, what he said is accurate, but it is up to me (or you) to figure out where the boundary lies on each different set. On this set, I literally had freedom to do anything as long as I wasn't in the shot ;)
