Missing the A1 :P

I was one of the first people on this forum to have an A1, and most likely one of the first to actually shoot with it on a job. So what right? But I was just thinking yesterday compared to all the new stuff on the market my original A1 would still hold up if I had it, what a great little cam it was. And if you dont mind the tape and the lack of VFR what a great little cam it still is IMO (talking original version here). Just look at the price of these used today and compare whats currently in the shops.

Anyway heres the extract I posted from that first outing. Sorry just taking a quick walk down memory lane.

Noel, I remember your clip was one of the reasons that I decided to get an A1. I remember thinking there was just something filmlike about it even though it was just available light. I consider myself a big gear hound but I really haven't been envious of any of the new cameras that's out on the market. The A1 continues to serve me very well and I'll be holding on to it for a long time.

My A1 just broke this sunday. I was looking at other cameras in the price range, but i'm pretty sure im going to get another A1 =)

Ha ha, memory lane. I remember it like it was yesterday, and you original guy's reviews/videos prompted me to buy one.

Same here. Noel's footage, along with Disjecta's XL-H1 stuff, and Elton's stuff (where'd he go anyway's?) sealed the deal for me.

Then before I had my A1 Marlon posted his Last Son of Celeste short film, which looked really great too and made me even more excited about getting an A1.

Recently, I've thought about going with an HNC150 because of the tapeless capabilities, but I think I will wait awhile to see what pans out with the Scarlet and any HD video DSLR's from Canon and Nikon. Hopefully Canon will come out with a more substantial upgrade (XH-A2 anyone?) later this year or early 2010.

What's the lowest you've seen a used A1 going for Noel?

Yeah, I remember I was the first to post a xha1 narrative shortfilm.... that was a crazy thread, i was answering questions left and right.

Marlon, have you ever read Arthur C. Clarke's "Against the Fall of Night" (also rewritten later as "The City and the Stars")? Sorry, had to ask because the far future world of your film slightly reminded me of it, and I think they also had an Overmind in it which you mentioned in your film. Just wondering if it had any influence on your story's future world.

That was a massive thread though. Are there any new A1 film projects you've been working on lately?

Yes, and I am sure many heads turned to the A1 when they saw that. Canon should have given us the A1 free :P

Or, whenever they come out with an A2 or something in the equivalent price range to replace the A1 and A1s, maybe they could give an early version to some of the members on this forum to test and get feedback?

Noel, I remember responding to your ad for the XH A1! Unfortunately, I couldn't pull enough money to buy it at the time (last July, was it?), and I've delayed my project until this April. The current street value for the camera is certainly a testament to it's staying power. The ads are going for $2300-$2500, which is roughly the same as it was a half year ago.

Anyone else shooting narrative features with the XH A1 these days? Btw...if anyone's looking to part with their a1....
