These are before and after stills of a film i shot recently with the DVX100 PAL version. Its called 'Miracle of Silence.' It was my first outing with the cam and we are very pleased with the results. DOP was Alec Boehm from LA. His work is stunning and he doesnt need a pitch! But we am currently in post production of the film and just wondered what you thought of the look of the film we are going for?

Editing and colour correction all doing with combining filters in VEGAS 5. SATURATE ADJUST, LEVELS, COLOUR CORRECTION and COLOUR CURVES. Saved as a preset filter.

I am new to this site and find it a very useful source of information from many aspects.

Any comments welcome.

Thanks

As per the above request i have included a few more stills.

I will post some low light ones ...that is the real test isnt it?

Please let me know what you think. Good Or Bad

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Wow, i really like what you have done to it. The shadows look much deeper and the highlighs, well they're actually highlights. I've been finding more and more that color correction is a must for any photographer. I'm looking for a good color correction specific program, do you like vegas? are the options there?

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Great stuff mate, well done! You've done a great job on that preset - could you post the preset here so all the Vegas users could make use of it? ;)

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

those are nicely done.
except sometimes I think having deeper shadows doesn't necessarily constitute a better film look. jimho.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

..i really love the grabs as far as emotional content and framing and composition and all, but i think that the black level may be a bit too high in the last 2. but i do like the look.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Hey man, these look great. I love the correction work in Vegas... That one of the lady (second one you posted) has a 21-gramish type look to it. Its great.

Any suggestions about the settings to achieve a look like this? I'm new to Vegas and the world of color correcting.

Looks great though, nice job.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Looks Great!

When I saw the first picture of the closeup of the man, I thought the "before" picture was better because there wasn't as much detail in the face, but the other photos changed my mind. I wonder if you could just soften up the detail on the faces a little but retain the rest of the look.

Like before the presets are roughly the same as the daylight footage in the frame grabs you will see above. Same combination of filters, however just adjusted for low light or night shoots. Just tweaking a little here and there to bring out the colour in the eyes yet make the blacks...well black like they should be. It is a very precise process but one i certainly dont mind taking the time to share with other users.

Our biggest finding was the 'slight grain issue' that most users complain of with the DVX as with many cameras in its league. This i am delighted to say has almost been completly addressed with a wonderful little filter called Dynamic Noise Reduction a third part plug in filter by a chap called Mike Crash. He's quite smart by the looks of it and seems like a generous fellow with a sense of humour too. He has a website with various Vegas plugins on it. It is below for all and any who are intersted. But before you use it i advise you to read the disclaimer. Just so my butt is safe!

I have found that there is a knack to using it. Well more so a knack as in WHEN to apply it to your footage that contains the GRAIN...that we want to reduce right? Basically add the DNR filter FIRST to your footage THEN immediatly render and use the rendered file as the master video file THEN add the other filters that i will post here.

Dont worry that when you use it in preview it seems a little mottled of strobed looking. That vanishes on the final output.

Just try it increment at a time until you get unsatisfied with the results.

Another note. We have tried this process on moving camera shots and static ones and it does work a little better when static but not that much.

Of course it also really depends on how the scene is lit. Alec my DOP knows his way around the DVX very well and adjusted the settings of the camera to best effect and of course the set. Between us we think that we have found something pretty outstanding ...well at least something that got us quite excited when we found out how to improve of film.

So we had a little grain like you can expect from the camera and that is something that we were all aware of preshoot. But under these circumstances the film look we were going for had to have continuity in colour depth and so on.

I will have some footage to display soon. We are still editing and of course tweaking but if it helps other DVX users then it can only be a good thing. But on my 48 inch TV you hardly notice the grain at all and the other footage remain intact. I will be very intertested to see it blown up on the big screen!

Lastly let me say that although the grain issue does exist as i am sure many advanced and even intermediate DVX users are aware. And this is just one of those little things that may help to address it. Personally i dont mind a tiny amount for night or low light scenes but the great thing is it is possible to greatly reduce it so when you view the final output you have the choice to keep it or reduce it.

So much so that i am placing a purchase of my own DVX this week. Now that my biggest concern is no longer a concern for what its worth.

Good Luck

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

These are wonderful and almost identical to the 'look' that I like to emulate.  Great job!

The first 2 are perfect looking.

IF you could get 'a little bit more' light on the woman in bedroom I think it would help and Ido hate seeing the brunettes hair turn from auburn to black. IF you could preserve her hair color a little more I think that would be nicer.

Serious though, nice work.

IMHO

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

These are the Vegas 5 filter i have used with the parameters set to achieve the first look of the male characters eyes in the XCU. Hope it helps any users.

I like Vegas a lot but i am always looking for more and better ways to improve the look of my work.

Now that i have learned a lot more ways to use it my finding out more about correction and masking correction i delivers all and more than i could possibly be looking for for a 'Look' but i am still learning.

If you have any specific questions i would be happy to answer them.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Hey I liked your "corrected" frame grabs very much -- also felt that you could have slightly reduced the contrast on the last one of the girl. But, thanks a lot for posting your settings -- I'll be using those as a reference...

Also, could you please post a link to the Vegas "noise-reduction" plugin that you referred to? I'm quite interested in that... Or do I need to e-mail Mike at the address you provided to request the plugin?

Thanks!

Thank you for your reply to my above post. I didnt actually use any contrast setting on any of the framegrabs or in the edit. But i think i know what you mean. They are actually a good bit darker on this forum due to the compression of the actual images in the graphic program i am using.

I'll take a look at that.

The link i posted above is the link to his site and access to all the plugins he provides.

Another great vegas site incase you havent heard of it is [ftp]www.vasst.com[/ftp] it really caters for the Vegas user.

Check it out sometime.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

yeah, i think that the contrast can be easily adjusted with the levels part of the effects chain.

Thank you for your kind feedback and evaluation of the frame grabs. I posted earlier that the film is currently being edited and hope to have my new site up and running real soon and shall post some clips on there.

Cheers

The grabs are a little darker and i think more contrasty that the actual original ones before i posted them. Compression probably?

I'll take a look at that.

Personally how much less contrast would you consider the images need just out of interest?

I know that tastes tend to vary

And i welcome all and every kind of feedback that can possibly be offered.

Thanks

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

I really like the looks you've achieved. I tend to like the high contrast look myself then again some of my favorite films are Narc/Man on Fire and 21 Grams...something about that look always draws me in...then again it seems to fit those story lines too. Anyway great job!
