Minority Report Blown-Out Look

You see I am anti going to film school for anything except cinematography. Reason is, and many people may disagree with me, you can actually dip the film into special chemicals that you can put together to make the film look how you want it to look. I heard about the Bleach-Bypass, and all of that stuff. But I know that in Minorty report and like Saving private ryan, they did it in all camera effects. Plus they added more lights than they needed to. And the best way to get it with out much hassel is if you shoot outside, do the one thing everyone tells you NOT TO DO. SHOOT TOWARDS THE SUN, and you will get that effect, just easy and straight to the point.

Don't think its quite that simple but if it works for you, hey, go for it.

It isn't that simple. No offense Waheed, but do you have any idea what you are talking about? A bleach bypass look is not accomplished "in camera". It's not as simple as pointing your camera straight at the sun and cranking your shutter speed up to 10,000. How absurd. A couple of things that makes the look of films like Saving Private Ryan and Minority Report different is the choice of film stock and shutter angle. Film stock especially can dramatically change the "look" of the film. And a true bleach bypass look is done with the actual processing of the film. How exactly do you intend to replicate that "in camera?"

For some light reading on this, try this link: http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/03/27/minority_report.html . Just search for 'bypass' and you'll get a paragraph explaining some of the things they did specifically in Minority Report.

to help add to that effect, expose the people right and and to where the background blows out. over exposed the back and make sure your you actors are exposed right. then you can digital modify it more. that you can get something blown out but the people look good.

hahaha ok, maybe we are all talking about something different.

ovjamaica: What i was talking about is a simple way of getting the light rays around the body I am not talking about the colour or skin tones or any of that stuff. I am simply talking about how the there is light rays behind him and coming across his body. And i think that is what was kind of asked from the thread.

Sorry for the miss understanding.

Well, if we're talking about the "light spill" around a person then yes, that would definitely be something done during the shot. Most of the talk about the bleach bypass was incorrect though, and I just wanted to correct that.

Well I think that film is film and video is video.
MR look is caracteristic for the bleach bypass archieved in the chemistry process. You can archieve this look in video (slightly) if you modify CC (bluish image), contrast and add a white promist filter in Magic Bullet (6 - harder) the highlights blown out.
