Minority Report Blown-Out Look

Was the blown-out effect in "Minority Report" achieved in-camera or was it a result of post-production?

I know it's likely been posted about before, but a quick search of the boards came up with nothing.

Thanks for your time.

magic bullet?? your kidding, right?
I don't think speilberg's crew used magic bullet, unless of course your describing how he should do it, digitally, i'm thinking thats what you mean.

They shot film, so it was done during lab processing. But there are tons of plugins to simulate this in video.

Or, depending on your project's budget, you could hire Janusz to shoot Super 35 on Kodak 5293 with Panavision Primo lenses and Dior silk nets and have it timed at Technicolor.

I know, that's why I was commenting on his post that they used magic bullet, because they didn't.
Maybe you didnt understand my post. It's all good.

Good deal, thanks for the info thus far guys!

For a greater effect, would it help to leave the windows a little hot while filming?

You might want to try a 1/2 or 1/4 Tiffen Black Promist if you want to do it in camera, and yes leave the windows a litttle hot.

OK, it was done in camera, and that is a fact not just me talking. They did the same with saving private ryan. Nothing in post to get that effect, and here is how i did it when i went to shoot stuff like that with a PD150. You go out to like a very sunny day, and put your shutter speed up to like 10,000 and your F stop to F1.8 and shoot towards the sun and you will get the same exact effect.

If you dont blieve me go check out some of my work, that has some shots with that effect, I think my demo reel has couple of shots in it. I dont have time to look through all of my footage but you can check it out on my webpage.

I got a very similar look to minority report by taking the shutter speed up to about 1/250, and then I tinkered with the scene setting to get a very cold look. Took master ped down to around -11 or so, and let a little extra light in to blow out the sky. it looked almost the same.

that was a really cool demo reel, Waheed. But I really didn't see anything that resembled Minority Report.

Here's a link to some grabs I got one day. Like I said, I just messed with scene settings, white bal., shutter, etc. and just followed people around for about an hour. Looks very close to Minority Report. (keep in mind that the images are interlaced and is the result of using silly ole Liquid Edition)

EDIT: oh, and no CC done to those grabs.

But notice how the ther is light rays behind him and coming across his body. The movie is in black and white but the original footage looked really great when i did that.

yeah, I see what you mean, Waheed. It just kind of threw me off because I didn't see any of that cold blue and desaturation from M.R.

Delusions definately got me interested. It has a very raw and realistic quality. and I take it that the image of the lead walking away on the site underneath the trailer is before you went B&W? If so, I reaally see what you mean about M.R. now.

You guys are doing it all wrong. You gotta soak the DV cassette in Clorox for about a couple hours. Don't over do it though!
