My friend has a Sony HVR-V1U and I am planning a shoot with it. But for capturing I have a minidv camera. Does the Sony HVR-V1U accept miniDV (non-HDV) tapes and if not then can i play it back on a non-HD minidv camera?

(I will check if i can shoot in sd mode with the Sony HVR-V1U)

It's not the tape, it's what you recorded on it. Record in DV (Standard definition) and any camera will be able to read it. Record in HDV (High def) and only an HDV camera will read it.

and will i need a minidv (hdv) tape for the camera or a regular sd minidv will also work?

... but when working with HDV, it's rather vital that you use the very best tape you can possibly get to minimize the potential of dropouts happening.

yea like barry said, get the highest quality tape. Ive used both in my fx7, havnt had a drop out on either, but on higher profile shoots i use the HD tapes
