I did a search and got tired of romming around forever so I figured I would as here since the Canon XH-A1 and the Sony HVR-Z1U film in HD to miniDv and the HVX200a can tape MiniDV is their an option the use HD tapes and record in HD???

I believe the Canon and the Sony film HDV on miniDV tapes, big difference. The HVX200 only records HD to P2 cards, and standard DV to miniDV tapes.

big, BIG difference between HDV and dvcproHD...

the "HD tapes" that the mentioned canon and sony cameras record on are really nothing more than normal DV tape with an HD logo slapped on them.

thanks!

thanks!

humm I know the they may just be DV tape with HD slapped on them but the footage speaks for it's self they look really good? so you absolutely cannot record HD to Tapes???on the HVX200... thats wierd it would of been a nice option for weddings and loog events for us who cant afford 2000$ in P2 cards...

It would seem that the Canon and Sony would then better meet your needs.

If you like the HDV footage, and both record to tape, then why consider the HVX200?

nope. miniDV tapes cant support the data rate required for dvcproHD.

its not "wierd" at all. dvcproHD is a different (and higher quality) format than HDV. its no wonder that it requires p2, firestore or direct computer connection.

now panasonic DOES make higher end HD cameras that record to larger format tape. but those cameras are like $40,000

just a though? I thought the footage looked pretty damn good on theo when I checked around Vimeo.com but of course I preffer P2 or solid state technology over tapes... that why I would just buy another 16GB and call it a day I was just wondering some things. Plus in 5 years at least I would still enjoy my HVX200 and not need to bring it in for replacement heads etc.....

Both the Canon XH-A1 and the Panasonic HVX-200 have strengths and weaknesses. The Canon uses HDV which is compressed and cumbersome to edit. It is, however, the best implementation of HDV on the market according to many sources. The use of an intermediate capture codec such as Aspect CineForm($499.00) overcomes this weakness. The image from the Canon is ultra sharp. By contrast the HVX record to a higher bitrate less compressed format, but that format can only be recorded to ultra expensive(although cheaper every day) P2 cards or a firestore. The resolution of the sensor of the HVX is significantly lower than that of the Canon and although the camera transcodes that to a 1080 image, the result is still a noticeably softer but very nice image. If you want something in between the two pricewise you might consider the XH-G1 which offers uncompressed HD-SDI output and the same high resolution as the XH-A1. In judging from samples, my opinion is that the difference between A-1/CineForm and G-1/HD-SDI is negligible. The price difference between the A-1/CineForm combo and the G-1 or HVX/P2 combo, however, is not nearly so negligible. You can also use a firestore as well as other tapeless solutions with the A-1. I chose the A-1 with no regrets.
