HDMI seems like a step down from Dual Link HD-SDI

I think RED should keep it simple and just have firewire out. But I went to see the Sony XDCAM HD yesterday, and it had HD-SDI out. HD-SDI is faster. Some of the more expensive displays, such as the Panasonic TH50 PHD8UK, have HD-SDI connections. I think RED will need the fastest connection possible. RED should probably have Dual Link HD-SDI 4:4:4 if it has something besides firewire. I don't know which is faster, but I think firewire is. Anyways, you can playback video directly from HD-SDI to a HDMI display you already have if you purchase a "HD Link."

If RED had a HDMI connection, the connection would be small, but RED would have to downconvert, which would require some internal device, similar to HD Link, which would take up some space inside the camera. So the net result would be that a HDMI connection would make space tighter.
Tell me if I am wrong. I didn't even know what HDMI or HD-SDI were untill yesterday when I started reading about them on the net. I am trying to learn about all this stuff before I go out and buy a HD camera. Maybe RED will have some new connector that we don't even know about that they invented just for RED. We can dream.

HD Link

I like your basic idea. I think what you want to do is watch what you are filming on a bug plasma screen, instead of on a tiny two inch flip out moniter. This might not be great for a ENG person, but is probably what someone who films movies would want.

I copied the following from the website.

"Because HDMI video connections are limited to shorter lengths, HDLink is ideal when you need to connect to video projectors with digital quality. Run SDI connections up to your ceiling mounted video projector, and use HDLink to convert to HDMI locally.

Video Assist on Location

A large 23" LCD panel makes the perfect viewing environment on-set. If you're doing the highest budget feature film, or a quick corporate video shoot your crew will love viewing on a large monitor.

Because you get full resolution you can check framing as well as camera focus. If you're using Panasonic™ cameras, then HDLink has the Panasonic™ LCD gamma table allowing you to remove cine-gamma and view linear video on an LCD monitor."

"SDI has absolutely no latency, so unlike FireWire you get instant response on NLE timelines." Maybe firewire is not the best. I will have to do some more reading.

"SDI video connects long distances up to 300 feet or 100 meters, so you can connect everyone together in your facility. Cables are simple BNC coax cables so you can easily make cables to the perfect length for your needs.'

I don't think firewire can have as long of cables as DSI.
