Mini DV Tape?

A friend of mine wants me to shoot an event for him and give hime the tape when I'm done. Yet he can't support HD in his NLE or in his Video camera for importing. Can I shoot on a regular Mini DV Tape SD quality and be able to give that to him with out any problems? I tried giving a friend an HDV tape once and they could not play it in their cam.

HDV tape is mini-DV. It's just less prone to dropout (supposedly). You can shoot SD on HDV or HDV on a normal mini-DV tape. It's not that your friend's camera can't read the tape, it's because the camera doesn't support HDV recording.

To answer your original question, you can record SD and it will read on any other camera. With Canon there are sometimes glitches where the tape won't read properly on anything but the camera that recorded it (happened to me once). So do a test first.

No - you can record HDV on a mini-dv tape. HDV tapes are just mini-dv tapes that are of very high quality resulting in less dropouts. You can use the cheapest mini-dv tapes you can find, you just may get dropouts, may not.

When I bought my HV20, the guy at Best Buy tried to sell me a "High Definition" tape. He said I could only shoot SD on a regular tape. LOL, had to set 'im straight.
