C100: MINI Bullheaded car commercial: Behind the Scenes

Hey guys,

just wanted to share a behind the scenes I shot with the C100 for MINI. The car commercial was filmed in Los Angeles back in September and involved working with dogs. I was the one man show behind this, from start to finish. I didn't even have a sound guy.

Anyway, it was a fun shoot and the C100 was perfect for this type of project. Run and gun with a EF 24 - 105 f4 and a 70 - 200 f4. I used the Wide DR profile for the entire shoot.

Check it out. I hope you enjoy. Love the C100.

Errmm….. which shots show the C100? I see lots of cameras but non look like the C100. I could be blind since it's late and I'm tired!

Really nice job. Being a BTS shooter is such a difficult thing sometimes, especially if the shoot isn't going as planned and there is a lot stress on set. Either way this one went, you made it seem like a fun shoot and your piece is very well put together. Great work all around!

Thanks guys for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed it.

The entire piece was shot with the C100 except for a few shots with the gopro when that guy Matt is talking about the pursuit car: "we can get high angle shots like a heli and real close to show the decals..."

It is challenging to shoot a BTS. You basically have to get your job done without getting noticed and bothering people.

At the end its all worth it. :)

Just saw the thread and would add to the group and say nice edit for pace! Good cuts good footage and decent sound!

That was great David! I have the same package and do a similar style of shooting. May I ask: Was there anything special done in post? Any extra grading, etc.?

Also, any stills of your shoulder rig? Working quickly, do you have a system for swapping the two lenses super quick when working solo? I have a lens pouch on my belt for the 24-105 but haven't figured out a way to lug the 70-200 with shade around besides a small backpack. Still takes me 60-90 secs to swap and secure caps, etc.

Thanks,

Thanks a lot guys. Glad you guys enjoy it!

Nothing special done in post, shot in WDR, and just tried to match the car's color in post. Sometimes it looked desaturated or more orange than yellow and vice versa. Other than that, basically straight out of the cam.

I don't work with a shoulder rig. Only the C100 with a lens, top handle and on camera mic ( Audio technics AT875R ). That's the power of this cam in my opinion. Low profile, run and gun, hand held.

As far as sound: I use a Rode NTG 2 and hard wire it into the cam and then just hand the mic to the talent and ask them to hold it right in front of their torso like a reporter. And I simply keep it out of frame. However, there are two interviews that had to be done with just the Audio Techncia on camera mic: the guy talking about blocking up the car, and the hero at the end how he's never seen the car being covered so many times before.... in those cases it was very hectic on set, and I didnt have time to pull out my mic and set up the tripod. Just grab the person and stay close to it (3-5 feet?), tell them to speak loudly and clear, and I think it works.

Also changing lenses I got pretty down now to a T: I always carry a cinebag backpack with them on my back. Take it off, turn off camera and go change them. I think I can do it in 10 - 15 secs. So my system is just to do it as fast as I can. Again no rig, which just slows down everything with this cam in this type of environment.

Thanks again for your comments. The C100 truly rocks!
