Might get a dvx, but...

...I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the certain limitations of 24p in various editing systems.

Right now I have no budget for anything heavier than (premiere) elements or Final Cut Express. From what I understand they dont support 24p...BUT how exactly does 24pa work and would they support it?

I guess I'm just asking that if I want to pull off a 24p effect, will I have to save my money for a heavier editing system? or is there other avenues?

24p is compressed and "rewrapped" into 60i so it can actually be recorded onto the miniDV tape. 24p repeats every half-frame in a 3:2 (or 2:3) pattern. 24pA does this a little differently, using a different method of replicating the half-frames, using a 2:3:3:2 pattern. I don't know why, but Apple software only supports 24pA. So if you plan on editing at 24fps and distributing at 24fps, then use 24pA. If you will export for broadcast TV, then it won't matter because it will eventually be telecined to 60i.

I have no idea about Adobe Premier. But I would say use FCE because it's very similar to FCP (same layout design, etc.) and FCP is very similar to Avid. If you learn FCE well, it won't be hard to make a transition.

Final Cut Express does not support 24fps timeline, so AFAIK you cannot use 24pA. If you only have FC Express, you have to use "standard" 24p, which is 24p that can be edited on a 30 fps timeline.

Thanks for the responses guys, but it sounds like you both have contrary views; lemme see if I understand:

Standard 24p CAN be edited in FCE, (as opposed to fcP?) (Joe sounds like he saying the opposite of this)

24pa is the more complex/authentic frame rate

Neither of you are sure about Elements

...am I following this correctly?

If this camera were not to have the 24p/pa feature would it still be your camera of choice to shoot in 30fps?

FCP can edit both. FCE only 24p (on a 30fps timeline).

The typcial look (motion rendering) will be the same, but it is easier to transfer to film.

Yes. As a matter of fact, I use 30p almost exclusively (although I live in a PAL country, I use the NTSC version of DVX100B).
