Microphone

Can I know which on-board microphone do you use on your C300's mic holder?

AKG SE300B Pre-amp w/ AKG CK93 Capsule. Sounds great and is nice and compact. There is a choice of 5 different capsules giving you a great range of recording patterns. The CK93 is described as hypercardioid polar pattern and good, frequency independent off-axis rejection". Fits my needs for day to day field sound.

Best,

Rode NTG-2 just because that's what I've had since I got the EX1. I feel like the C300 is worthy of the NTG-3 or -8.

NTG-2 is a good on-cam mike, but the NTG-3 is a totally different beast. We used it recently and I expected some background noise from my experience with the NTG-2, but the 3 is much better.

Best,

Looks good but seems not to have that much rear noise rejection. wonder if it's any better indoors than my MKH416 ?
The Sanken CS1 CS3 seem to be the gold standard but at a C300 appropriate price point.
The point is, most of the Hypercardioids are fabulous outdoors but the minute you introduce reflective surfaces (indoors) you end up with a nasty floor and they will pick up side and rear noise from those reflections. On camera I only use shotguns outside and insist on wireless lav any chance i can get.

Uhhhh wow Graham. I'd expect less snippy sarcasm from a "senior member." Sorry, just asking (thought I was just responding to the thread, not you in particular). Interesting that the OP got all this advice and no one even bothered to ask him what application compelled him (or you for that matter) to mount the mic onboard in the first place. If it's for reference audio it doesn't matter, now does it? If it's for wide-angle frat-party closeups then it matters more because you will have the mic in close quarters and you'll be able to discern a $239 shotgun and a $700 shotgun. If you're doing sitdown interviews with your mic onboard, it doesn't matter because using an on-camera mic in that situation is just dumb. If you are booming properly just out of frame, then it REALLY matters; the diff between an NTG2 and NTG3 in such a situation becomes profound.

Just giving you a hard time man. You made it sound like why would anyone need to put a mic on the camera as opposed to asking the OP what his intended use is. I just assumed he was looking for a general on camera mic for run and gun doc type work. But you made good points about the different applications.

It's all good.

It might be a moot point for you guys with dual system in mind for cinema applications, but I'm awfully curious about the quality of the C300 audio recording deck and how it stacks up against other products (Scarlet X, F3 or even down to the EX3 & EX1r)....
