Microphone Issues

I have an XLR Battery Powered mic with an XLR to 3.5 inch converter. I also i have a battery powered 3.5mm RODE video mic. When trying to use these with my GH1, I purchased a 3.5 to 2.5mm converter plug from Radio Shack, but when I turn either mic on, the sound is still captured from the GH1's built in mic.

What am I doing wrong? I think the converter I bought might have been for headphones, but I couldn't find a mic one and figured it's the same connections going either way...or am i wrong?

Are you sure the plug is going in all the way?

I'm using a HOSA adapter I got from B&H, and I had to trim the plastic around the plug to get it to go in all the way. But even then...it's not a real good connection...and I ruined a lot of audio when trying to use an Azden mic on my GH1 when the connection would fail. I won't trust using the mic input again. Besides, the camera is really only good for recording ambient audio with its auto gain, so plugging in a mic is kind of a waste anyways. Use a digital audio recorder instead.

I'll check to make sure. Thanks.

I do use a separate audio recorder on most projects, but when I'm by myself working on throwaway projects, it'd be nice to get a little better sound if possible.

I have the HOSA adapter 3.5mm to 2.5mm from B&H, and have the Rode NGT-2 mic with the XLR to 1/8in. 3.5mm (which has a impedance transformer in it) and It works well. I've run around and had the mic mount (not the plug) come slightly loose and no problem with audio
dropping out. However , as you had mentioned, I also use a 2nd recording device (Zoom HN4)
as the Audio on these cameras (All DSLR Camera) is lousy. Check and make sure you have a
transformer cable from XLR to 3.5mm. I would also get the HOSA adapter from B&H (an inexpensive fix) .

Good luck,
