Micro 35 tests V.2

Rich Lee

I shoot Pirates.
OK, finaly had some time this weekend to shoot some more images with the Micro 35. i feel much better about the images this time, rough looking stuff still...but its got me thinking about the possibilities.

there are still a few that are soft, mostly my fault, need to keep tabs on the cameras focus/zoom calibration...that little magnet trick removes all the info and the focus assist still can show things being sharp.

i shot mostly with a 200mm lens handheld.

still cant get the edges of the GG totaty in focus...need to look into that..maybe browse the redrock forums for some info...

Those look really nice. Were those taken with a cine lens or a standard 35mm SLR setup?

I could see where some of those shots would probably be a little better with a higher DOF, like if you wanted to show detail in the crowd as someone walked through it.

In that case do you think you would just pull the adapter and shoot with the DVX only? Would you be able to match the footage in post later you think?

Wow, Rich, I love the imagery and the colors you got. Very filmic.

Am I correct in thinking that the low light sensitivity issue with the DVX is moot if using one of these adapters? Is the sensitivity now the job of the 35mm lens? What I'm saying is if you use a fast lens like an f1.2, are you going to get much more responsiveness in low light situations than you would shooting without the adapter?

Also, when you actually get the thing focussed fully, are you getting less detail in the distance than you would with the native DVX lens? Your stuff looks pretty sharp, relatively...

In general, I'm a big fan of yours, you have a great eye and that's evident in both the moving and still images you create.

Keep it up

yeah im sure you could mix the 2 images. but personaly, i really like film lenses/shallow dof...even if its not shooting at 1.4 wide open you can stop down the film lens...having any sort of 35mm dof is, to me, more pleasing to the eye then 1/3 video dof.

Thanks man, yeah, there are issues with low light. i don't know the exact details/numbers. but, basically the slr lens projects onto a frosted piece of glass then captured with the dvx lens...so, its an additive process...each element takes light away.

here are some pics...all shot in the same lighting setup...just a fluorescent drafting lamp. im using the same lens on the 20d that i am on the Micro35.

you can see the difference...unless im doing something wrong...i am using EOS lenses...which have to have their f stops adjusted on the SLR before they are put on the micro35...maybe it revearts back to a higher f-stop when it comes off the SLR? i dunno? may need to look into that...

wish my 20d could shoot 24fps!

Nice clips, I love the shot when the train pulls up... Sweet looking.

The biggest issue with these adapters is the light loss and soft images. Sucks but it's a price to pay this early in the game.

sweeeeeeeeeet. Nice foreground/background.

Does anyone know if there are any rental houses in the UK which will hire out a 35mm adapter?

I've got a 50mm 1.8 lens for my 300D and its sweeeet. Did u use the 200mm lens for both shots of that metal panel with the button on the motorway? one looked like 200mm the other looked wide-angle.

Rich,

Hey, I'm gonna pick a mini 35 adaptor, but there is a lot I still don't understand about them. Couple questions:

First, a mini 35 is an adaptor that lets you use camera lenses, right? I mean, if you have a mini 35, you would still have to buy the lenses -- is that how it works. If so, how do you know which lenses to buy? Do you use different lenses for different effects/focal lengths? Or is there a "jack of all trades" lense that is pretty good for all situations?

They have a newer version of the ground glass that's been going by the name "M3". I think you can order it for $15. More info on the forum.

Was that guy with the camera taking a pic of you? Nice work man. I love the middle grab of the radio out of the 3. Can you explain what all you used to create that look? Amazing!

He used his Canon 20D digital camera. Not the DVX.

Hey Rich, looks like you shot all this just a few blocks from my office (5th and Spring). I was out a few nights ago shooting as well... maybe we crossed in the night, eyes glued to the LCDs.
