ive read some of the threads here and was wondering if there is a general recommendation on a mic used when directly recording into camera? We plan to shoot with a boom but need to buy a mic for a last minute shoot this weekend? Im not a sound expert so im learning as i go along.

Read around. There are many threads on this question, and in most of them you will find this statement (or one like it): there is no one, single mic that will solve all the world's problems.

interiors? You'll want to start with a hypercardioid... Oktava seems to be the proven budget-minded workhorse.

Exteriors? Start with a short shotgun... Rode NTG series (NTG-1 and NTG-2 are essentially the same mic, but the 2 has a battery compartment where the 1 is phantom-only).

Exteriors with really wide framing? Well, wireless lavs, but to a point a long shotgun gets better reach for wider framing.

There are too many other variables to narrow down one mic, but there you go.

Since you didn't give us a budget here's what's best:

First, don't use a mic on the camera, it rarely gets close enough to deliver proper and high quality sound.

If you still insist - get a Schoeps 641 for interiors, a Sennheiser 416 or Sanken CS3e for exteriors.

A mic to do what?

Since money is tight these days ill probably get a ntg2 and see what i can do with it. Seems like a good one for the money that can be used both indoors and outdoors in various conditions. Wish i had the money for multiple mics though.
